Full Score-Full orchestra score. Full orchestra score for Per Norgard's Symphony No. 5 (1987-90 rev.1991). Manuscript copy. Programme note: My 5th Symphony was commissioned by the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra and premiered on December 6th 1990 by and dedicated to the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra and conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen. After the premiere in 1990 I decided to revise the beginning (and only the beginning) of the work. The first pages of the score were discarded and about 20 seconds of new music was written in the summer of 1991. The new and final versionwas premiered on 1st of May 1992. The symphony progresses without pauses between movements often in several layers of tempo with mutual golden sectionproportions. The listeners experience of form in the work will therefore depend on the directions of his own attention. But so far as overall divisions are concerned four sections (perhaps five) - running into each other - can be traced: an expansive cascading introduction a kind of scherzo an chaconne-like adagio and a kind of finale again with the phenomenon of cascades as a main idea. However as the course is from time to time thrown into chaos by convulsive twitching and crises other experiences of form are opened out within a spectrum from wild to cautious from dramatic to contemplative in a universe of tempi which can suggest the title of a book of poems by the Danish Michael Strunge (1958-1986): Velocity of life. A listener described the symphony as a walk with a fire-breathing dragon and a reviewer described it with words like a pacifist in times of war. Anyway words and programme note are - as Carl Nielsen said about titles - only road signs for personal experiences in the area of music itself. Per Norgard

Prelude And Ant Fugue With A Crab Canon for Ensemble was composed by Per Nørgård in 1982. Programme Note: The work was commissioned by Nieuve Ensemble (New Ensemble) in Holland and was premiered in December 82 in Amsterdam. As the title suggests the work refers to the baroque genre prelude and fugue but seen through the 20.th century consciousness: The prelude is based - bar for bar - on the famous Bach-prelude in C major from the Well Temperated Piano I which is reflected as in a prism where the 5 inherent parts are magnified or transposed to other octaves or its basic rhytm of 8:5:3 is widered to bigger stretches (or reduced to smaller) keeping its golden section - proportion. The Crab Canon as well as the fugue is inspired by Escher the Dutch aartist creating the Illusionary Realism (with wrong but convincing perspectives etc.) in the way that a real fugue never is undertaken but a rush of parts is always interlocking - and in a big hurry. After a slower cadenza-like section the work closes with a combinatioin of the Bach-prelude-ending and the Fugue theme. Break-Dance is an obvious next of kin to the two Clarinet trios Vox In Rama and Tattoo For Three . This piece however combines the roaring despair of the first trio with the twisted rhythmical display of the latter. The title of course is a reference to the modern street-dance electric boogie but the very music itself takes the naming most literally indeed: formally and rhythmically after a straightforward head-on opening it breaks into isolated jagged fragments winding up in a bouncing piano cadenza. Albeit not an obvious piano concerto the piano part hovers in the front line the same way the horizontal guy ringing himself on the pavement is doubtless an eye-catcherto passers-by. The springy 'body-language' that kicks off the piece suddenly stiffens and freezes into hard-edged blocks and the real 'dance of breaks' emerges into focus. Break-dance is commissioned by and dedicated to Yvar Mikhashoff and Spectrum. Arranged for 2 Trumpets 3 Trombones and Piano. Arcana was composed by Per Nørgård in 1970. Scored for Accordion Electric Guitar and Percussion. Programme Note: Arcana means mysteries secrets but the score for this very successful work (which was first performed at a festival of 20th century music in Dublin Eire) looks quite lucid simple and innocent the same 4 or 5 notes appearing again and again in all parts creating an unmistakable sense of monotony. The musicians however begin to play with this material and gradually layer after layer of musical secrets inherent in the material are revealed and thus a crescendo of musical events is building up in the course of the performance of the work the finalstate of near-chaos being topped by exhilarating finale proper.Per Nørgård Arcana was composed by Per Nørgård in 1970. Poul Ruders MONODRAMAMONODRAMA dedicated to percussion virtuoso Gert Sørensen and commissioned by The Danish Radio was written in New York in the early winter 1988 and makes the centre as well as the middle of the tri-part opus called The Drama Trilogy. All three works employ the word Drama in their title Drama in the original meaning of the word: event. No specified event but a premonition or omen rather that something is afoot a free Drama-offer from which anyone may populate the stage of his private inner theatre. The first piece of the series DRAMAPHONIA for piano and chamber ensemble was premiered in London in the spring of 1988 by Lontano and Poul Rosenbaum. Thispiece is emotionally and rhythmically unstable as opposed to MONODRAMA (single-event) which is modelled from the archetypal idea of obtaining accomplishment from nothingness. The 31 instruments of the orchestra (no flutes and no violins or violas) are more or less wrapped around the solo-part to become one with that and thus emerge as one gigantic percussion instrument. The rhythmical patterns of the orchestral part more or less follow those of the percussionpart a single-event also on the rhythmical level. After 20 minutes climbing toward the peak of rage the composition casts its slough and is reborn into a chorale-like march and the struggle between totally depopulated sound-scapes and ferociously roaring sub-oceanic storms begin and the piece paces toward the abyss: rage becomes despondency New Rage as opposed to New Age the spineless worshipper of beauty without pain. The third instalment of the DRAMA TRILOGY the cello concerto POLYDRAMA will be premiered in Stockholm May 1990.MONODRAMA lasts aprox. 32 minutes.Poul Ruders Poul Ruders MONODRAMAMONODRAMA dedicated to percussion virtuoso Gert Sørensen and commissioned by The Danish Radio was written in New York in the early winter 1988 and makes the centre as well as the middle of the tri-part opus called The Drama Trilogy.
