Horace Parlan Song Book This book is based on an idea by the Danish tenor saxophonist Jesper Thilo and has been made possible by a grant from The Ben Webster Foundation in Copenhagen Transcription: Olivier Antunes. Photos: Kirsten Malone Horace Parlan - Born in 1931 the American jazz pianist Horace Parlan developed his own unique piano style as a result of his affliction with polio which partially paralysed his right hand. From 1957 Parlan was in high demand among the great jazz musicians and bandleaders of New York such as Charles Mingus Stanley Turrentine Booker Ervin andRoland Kirk. During this time he was also busy recording under his own leadership. In 1972 he relocated to Denmark where he became very active on the Danish jazz scene as well as in other European countries. This led to an array of collaborations with such musicians as Archie Shepp Jesper Lundgaard Benny Carter Jimmy Roger Pedersen Idrees Sulieman Christina von Bulow Ed Thigpen NHoP Alex Riel Johnny Griffin Jackie McLean Mads Vinding and Red Holloway. In 2000 Parlan received the prestigious Ben Webster Award.

Without Electronics-Fiasali Dreaming by Andy Pape is a piece for Mezzo-Soprano and Chamber Ensemble. Orig. version WITH electronics is available: KP01133 Programme Note: It is my intention that this piece should represent a dream sequence. The text is therefore non-intelligible in any semantic sense in the same way that most dreams are. It is also my ambition that the actual music is unintelligible (irrational) which is a very different matter alltogether. It could easíly be maintained that all music is irrational and therefore unintelligible. It is my hope that the text in connection with the four delays create a spacial musical unreality or distance which ceases at the very end of the piecewhere all delays and amplification stop and we again can wake up. Work for Chamber Ensemble dating from 1989. The composer writes: The Title SHADOWLAND refers on the one hand to a blurred ‘Landscape’ of shadows where small shadows are formed behind other shadows and where the outlines are constantly disintegrating. On the other hand the title refers to the fanciful and unreal landscapes I felt in the music while I was writing it. SHADOWLAND has four movements with proportions 4-7-4-3. These proportions can be found on various levels from the smallest cell to the largest form. The first movement is divided into four parts which have exactly the same proportions as the whole pjece and behind the fastrunning melodies and trills thatdominate the whole movement one can hear in the second third and fourth parts anticipations of the second third and fourth movements respectively. The second movement begins at the edge of silence with almost unperceptible glissandi and indistinct chorales. Gradually the hushed landscape is drowned out by sudden expressive melodic outbursts and ends with violent dance rhythms. The third movement is built up of clouds of staccato tones and is a further development of the pointillistic ideas from CLAIROBSCUR. In th last movement the horn plays a long soloistic melody line which the other instruments imitate and echo. These echoes swamp the horn line from time to time. SHADOWLAND was commissioned by and dedicated to The London Sinfonietta. Work for Chamber Ensemble dating from 1989. This work for orchestra was commissioned by Arktisk Filharmoni and was premiered at the Stormen Cultural Centre in Bodø in February 2020. The composer writes 'A Walk to Beethoven' is a walk to Beethoven’s Symphony no. 7. It is the main theme of the second movement that you can discern in my piece. I chose that theme partly because I just love it partly because it has within itself a wandering pace. The work consists of 14 small parts (played without breaks). I do not regard it as 14 variations: it is rather 14 different versions like 14 flowers grown from the same musical seed. Or maybe: like 14 different paths all leading to Beethoven. This work for orchestra was commissioned by Arktisk Filharmoni and was premiered at the Stormen Cultural Centre in Bodø in February 2020.
