Programme Note WHIRLS´ WORLD (1970) for wind quintet. “Whirl´s World” was composed in 1970 as one of a series of works which explored the so-called musical ´difference-phenomenon´. This term (which I coined in connection with a series of lectures in California that year) indicates a motivic duplicity in which two - often very simple - melodic ideas come ´out of phrase´ with each other giving rise to a course of constantly changing conditions. In Whirl´s World the difference phenomenon is heard from the beginning where a three-note motif and a four-note motif are set against each other. It all proceeds lake a lightning-fast series of chess moves first note number 1 of thethree-note motif is moved then note number 1 of the four-note motif thereafter note number 2 of the three-note motif - and so on. This fast opening flows into a slow section in which the differences now appear as ´fluctuations´ between very closely related tones (of which one is sung by the musician). There is only one movement built up as an organic growth from slow to furiously fast whirling and back again to slow which can be heard as ´slow-motion whirls´ as a water-world of ripples and bubbles. All this is framed by the introduction described above and a corresponding conclusion in which the movement is now descending ending in the resolute bass full-stop. Full score for this work for Guitar and Small Ensemble. Ruders writes: The word has its origin in ancient Greek: Psalmoidia i.e. ‘singing to the harp’ and we find the word again in Psalter derived from Psallein ‘playing the strings with the fingers’. 'Psalmodies' written for and dedicated to David Starobin has no specific religious content or aim; the collection of eleven pieces forms a concert-suite displaying a wide range of emotions; from the jubilant to the dismal the guitar playing the natural leading part ‘inside’ a chorus of woodwinds and strings. The title and each movement mirrors the variety of moods from the secular feast of A Fanfare for All to the sacredintroversion of A Prayer with Halo. 'Psalmodies' opens with a guitar-solo and closes down with one: the rejoicing Entrance for One and the hushed melancholy Exit for One thus exemplifying the emotional compass which I in an essay on my first symphony; ‘Himmelhoch Jauchsend-zum Tode betrübt’ entitle: Of Joy and Grief. Of Worship and Oblivion. Full score for this work for Guitar and Small Ensemble. Liber Canticorum Va-The text for the choral work 'Hominis dies' is partly form the book of psalms partly from Isaiah in the Latin translation of the Bible. The words are relevant today - they are about the fate of humanity - our fear of war and destruction violence and polution. The choral work is divided in three parts all of them introduced with a Halleluja. A Halleluja is most often a praise but that is not the case in this work where the suppressed and oppressed manking with this work express desperation and sorrow but also hope.
