Was Bedeutet Die Bewegung... a Mendelssohn song cycle for Baritone and Strings was premiered in 2012 by the renowned Baritone Matthias Goerne. This is no workaday transcription: in addition to skilfully arranging seven Mendelssohn songs for Strings and Voice Rasch has created a number of striking interludes to link the songs together. These interludes written in Rasch ’s own post-Romantic voice and containing modern techniques including glissandi and snap-pizzicati add a whole new dimension to the 25-minute cycle startlingly revealing its dark undercurrents and psychologies.

Beethoven’s sublime music drifts strangely through the centuries and is warped vaporised and refashioned as if in the words of Hillborg the Arietta ‘is dreaming yet another variation on itself’. This seven-minute concert overture recalls the early days of the railways and one of the most famous engines of all time ‘The Rocket’. It was commissioned by the Director of the North Hertfordshire Wind Band Phillip Ellis who is the great-great-great-grandson of Stephenson and depicts the Victorian carnival atmosphere on the day of the engine’s inauguration. An ideal work for a good school youth or county level band.

'New York'... or to be more precise Manhattan. For anyone who is familiar with this bizarre and wonderful city this piece needs no explanation. This brass band transcription has been made by Phillip Littlemore and provides a driving and punchy 4 minute work for brass band. 'New York' is the third movement of 'East Coast Pictures' originally written for wind band commissioned in 1985 by the British Youth Wind Orchestra with funds from National Westminster Bank plc. These three short pictures' were inspired by several visits by the composer to a small part of the USA's East Coast an area that provides great extremes in the geography and the people.This work has recently been recorded on the CD East Coast Pictures' by the Leyland Band conducted by Michael Fowles and is available from this site (catalogue number: 0-571-52109-6).
