Hymnus was commissioned by the Oxford Bach Choir on the occassion of their centenary year. The first performance was given by the Oxford Bach Choir and the City Of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra on June 1st 1996.

Following the composition of Harold En Italie for Viola and orchestra in 1834 Berlioz began work on the opera Benvenuto Cellini which subsequently failed on its first performances at the Paris Opera in 1838. Berlioz withdrew the opera for substantial revision and from some of the discharged material he later fashioned this Reverie Et Caprice (in versions both for Violin and orchestra and Violin and Piano). Dedicated to Berlioz's violinist friend Alexandre-Joseph Artot the piece was quickly taken up by several celebrated violinists of the time including David Joachim and Wieniawski and was played all over Europe. This new edition for Violinand Piano by the musicologist and performer Neil Heyde is based on the first edition of the score.

Tchaikovsky's ballet The Nutcracker is a fairy-ballet in two acts three tableaux and was composed in 1891/2. It is based on The Nutcracker and the Mouse King a story by E. T. A. Hoffmann (1816). O Rex Gentium sets the Magnificat antiphon for December 22 - one of the great 'O' antiphons traditionally sung at Vespers in the week before Christmas. These texts are all invocations of the coming of Christ each one offering praise to him using titles taken from the prophet Isaiah. This piece was commissioned in 2011 to form part of a complete set of the seven O Antiphons for the Merton College Choirbook. It is conceived in grand and declamatory style owing a respectful debt to the great motets of Bruckner. Formed in A-B-A structure it uses block harmony in the outer sections for impact whilst the central part employssome more reflective and linear writing. A brief coda suggests an atmosphere of wonder and mystery at the prospect of Christ's birth.

In upstate New York lie the Catskill Mountains - an extraordinary combination of tranquillity and power peace and majesty. Once seen they call you back again and again. This brass band transcription has been made by Phillip Littlemore and explores the sonorous and warm sounds of the brass band. The Catskills is the second movement of East Coast Pictures originally written for wind band and was commissioned in 1985 by the British Youth Wind Orchestra with funds from National Westminster Bank plc. These three short pictures' were inspired by several visits by the composer to a small part of the USA's East Coast an area that provides great extremesin the geography and the people.
