This piece was written in homage to the great pianist Artur Rubenstein towards the end of his life when he lent his name to the 'Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition'. Rubenstein overcome by gratitute wrote to Carlos CHavez in Spanish to thank him. In keeping with its name Estudio A Rubinstein is a very difficult piece for the advanced pianist. The music is busy but graceful nonetheless.

This composition was inspired and originally titled according to a romantic vision of the Far East (which Ernest Bloch had never visited). At one time the suite had a set of descriptive titles which begun with 'In the Jungle (Life in the Primitive World)'- at attempt to portray Nature in its wildest and most primitive state. The second movement was known as 'Grotesque (Simian Stage)' - it is sardonic and fantastic. The third movement was was inspired by the tales of a close friend about a night-time journey through Javanese villages from which could be heard the distant sound of wooden musical instruments. The finale originally 'Land of the Sun (China)' was Bloch said 'the most cheerful think I ever wrote.' It is based on pentatonic motives (like a common Chinese scale) and also recalls music from the other movements.

Brazilian composer Octavio Pinto was in fact not a musician by trade but actually an architect with a thriving business throughout Brazil. He did manage however to get some Piano lessons from the well-known pianist Isidore Philipp as a young man and he issued a relatively steady stream of music – character and show pieces for solo Piano – until he died in 1950. Pinto 's most often-played piece of music is one written for and made famous by his wife the famous Brazilian pianist Guiomar Novaes: Childhood Memories (Scenas infantis from 1932). One of those five pieces for Piano Run Run! is now available in this G. Schirmer edition. This brilliant rapid piece is fun to play and listen to for young and old. The music paints a scene of running children as the title would suggest which is interrupted midway through with a calmer section as ‘The Organ-Grinder passes by’. Run Run! is a short yet effective piece.

William Schuman's setting of a poem by Genevieve Taggard takes as its theme the necessity of simple pleasures and the importance of each person. This version is for upper voices. The song is in a loose rondo form and the music alternates between the main jerky almost angry music and the smooth but still precise middle section with its growing self-belief.

Based on the parable from the Gospel of Luke this song for SATB choir has added drama in the shape of two soloists - one baritone and one tenor - who assume the roles of the Pharisee and the Publican. There is much interplay between parts illustrating the difference between the characters of the men.
