One Piano Four Hands-One Piano Four Hands. Debussy 'Petite Suite' arranged for one piano four hands. Edited by Weekley and Arganbright. A French composer of piano music opera cantatas ballets and orchestral and chamber works. His most notable pieces are 'Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune (Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun)' (1894) and 'Nocturnes' (1899). Inspired often by pictorial subjects (Monet's water impressions became 'reflections in the water' for piano) and by the elusive and unnameable in nature (footsteps in the snow still leaves and the hypnotic overwhelming sensations of his rare visits to the French coastline) Debussy's music develops chords melodies and orchestration that are connected moreby a single surreal observation than by an overriding logic. For example one note is similar to another in a distantly related enharmonic chord but this brief tie is enough to follow or a single gesture will soon evolve spreading outward in all directions until a whole orchestral piece is made from a single falling line ('Afternoon of a Faun'; 'Jeux'). Not bad for a kid born over his parents' china shop who loved Lassus and Palestrina as much as ragtime and Javanese music. Blue Gene Tyranny

Originally titled 'Six Christmas Pieces' in the original English edition. The more generic name 'Kinderstucke' or 'Children's Pieces' was later considered more suitable firstly as the works were composed for his wife's relatives in Britain with whom he stayed in Summer 1842 and secondly because they exude no real yuletide characteristics.

The 'Arpeggione' was a guitar-like instrument tuned in the same way as the guitar but held between the knees and played with a bow. The instrument possessed a warm quality and it was this attribute which Schubert exploited in the sonata which he wrote for it in 1824. Schubert's manuscript on which this edition is based contains an alternative violin part which dates from the same period. To avoid an excess of leger lines and clef changes Schubert wrote the arpeggioned part almost exclusively in the treble clef which the performer was expected to read an octave lower than written. The work was edited for the viola when it came into its own as a solo instrument around the turn ofthe century.
