Composed during the summer of 1988. Commissioned by The Norwegian Brass Band Club First performed in the Grieg Hall¬? at the 10th Anniversary Concert for the Norwegian Championship Bergen February 1989. EBML conducted by Michael Antrobus. The work is important for me because it was my first piece to be played outside Norway. Black Dyke/David King performed it and did a recording of it in 1991. The composer: In the original score I quote a Swedish bishop (Olaus Mangnus) who lived in the 15th century. He travelled around Scandinavia and drew maps - very important historic material. When he came to the north of Norway (where I come from) hedescribed the wind from the north as Ciricus: (something like) Worst of all winds is Circius that revolves(?= turn upside down) heaven and earth. (Well not a good translation I¬?m afraid). The fast sections reflects the mighty winds from the north. In the middle section I borrowed a folksong-like tune (by C. Elling a norwegian composer). The text (by Kristoffer Janson) tells about old times when the fishermen used open boats: they had to put their lives in the hands of God. De opening en het slot van dit werk beschrijven 'Circius' de wind die hemel en aarde verwoest. Het middendeel is een bewerking van het Noorse volkslied 'The fisherman's speech to his son'. De inhoud van het lied komt overeen met Circius. De vader verzoekt zijn zoon de krachten van de natuur te trotseren maar bovenal te respecteren. Een kort doch spectaculair concertwerk dat het gehele orkest in de greep heeft.

A thoroughly gripping melody of Irish descent constitutes the basis on which this exceedingly beautiful little piece of music rests. Down by the Salley Gardens is a guaranteed heartbreaker on your next concert. Since the lyrics of this Irish traditional are also supplied with the set a combination of band with solo voice or even choir is a definite possibility. The Arranger: Leafing through a song-book containing traditionals etc. I was immediately struck by this song and its exceptionally beautiful and atmospheric melody. I simply had to do something with it. Een meeslepende traditional van Ierse komaf staat aan de basis van dit wonderschone werkje. Down bythe Salley Gardens belooft een hartenbreker te worden op uw eerstvolgende concert. De tekst van deze Ierse traditional wordt meegeleverd en daarmee is een combinatie met zang ook zeer goed mogelijk. De arrangeur: Bladerend door een liedboek met traditionals enz. was ik meteen getroffen door dit nummer en zijn uitzonderlijk mooie en sfeervolle melodie. Ik moest gewoon iets mee doen.

Trias Politica is de aanduiding voor de driemachtenleer oftewel de leer der machtenscheiding geformuleerd door de Franse wijsgeer Charles Montesquieu (1689-1755). Ter bescherming van de rechten en de vrijheid van burgers moeten deze drie machten (wetgevende- rechterlijke- en de uitvoerende macht) in een staat streng gescheiden blijven. Deel 1 - de wetgevende macht - is gegoten in de klassieke sonatevorm. In de grondwet van de muziek is dit één van de belangrijkste muzikale vormen. Net zoals in een wet is de sonatevorm strikt omschreven. Deel 2 - de rechterlijke macht - geeft de sfeer weer van het werk van de rechters. Na het dossier van een afstandin alle rust te hebben bekeken en alle partijen ter zitting te hebben gehoord komen zij tot een weloverwogen oordeel. Deel 3 - de uitvoerende macht - is er in vele gedaantes. Blauw op straat rechercheurs in burger en niet te vergeten het leger. Op vele manieren wordt er opgetreden tegen personen en organisaties die denken boven de wet te leven en een gevaar vormen voor onze samenleving. Verplicht werk minirepertorium 1e divisie fanfare.

Mombassa is a bustling port in Kenya and this characteristic can clearly be heard in the music. The bright fresh sounds of Mombassa Beat are sure to excite and delight performers and audiences alike!

Carl Wittrock became inspired by huge icefields surrounding the South Pole. Colourfull and majestic sounds provide the composition a fascinating view of this 6th continent. 'Antarctica' is a free impression of the scenery in the Antarctic. Melodies are linked together to convey the various aspects of the landscape. These melodies together with their simple harmonic accompaniments make this work pleasant for both the listener and the musician.

Excelsior was composed by Rob Goorhuis in the year 2000 on the occasion of the 75th anniversary in 2001 of the Amsterdam-based concert-band Jong Excelsior. Excelsior is a one-movement fantasia consisting of contrasting themes. The first theme (the Excelsior theme) is characterized by angular figures moving in an upward direction. The second theme is playful and humorous in nature. Rob Goorhuis who was born and bred in Amsterdan may even have utilized memories of his own juvenile pranks in this second theme. The third theme which is introduced by the cor anglais is melancholy and melodious. The elements mentioned above interchange in a thoroughlycaptivating manner which ultimately results in an attractive composition fully capable of adding lustre to an anniversary. Excelsior werd door Rob Goorhuis gecomponeerd ter gelegenheid van het 75-jarig jubileum van muziekvereniging Jong Excelsior te Amsterdam. Excelsior is een doorgecomponeerde fantasie bestaande uit met elkaar contrasterende themas. Het eerste (Excelsior)thema wordt gekenmerkt door hoekige stijgende figuren. Het tweede thema is speels en humoristisch van karakter. Rob Goorhuis geboren en getogen Amsterdammer verwerkte hierin wellicht herinneringen aan de kwajongensstreken uit zijn jeugd in Amsterdam. Het derde thema ge?ntroduceerd door de Engelse hoorn is melancholiek en zangerig. Genoemde elementen wisselen elkaar op boeiende wijze af zodat een attractieve compositie is ontstaan. In this composition the composer gives an impression of the village square where all the young people gather. In four movements he takes us along to his home town: 1. Folkdance - Moments of happiness freedom from worries and optimism 2. Sunday Afternoon - a musical picture of a quiet day 3. Hide 'n Seek - time for sports and games 4. Saturday Night Fever - the sounds of a Saturday can also be heard on the square

The three sections of Movements demonstrate the concept of motion in all its orms. The March briskly gets the band going (in motion). section 2 (Sarabande) is solemn and melodious (slow motion) and the Allegro con Brio in section 3 forms an energetic conclusion (commotion) to this enchanting and instructive composition by Patrick Millstone.

Le Champion de Tir is de muzikale uitbeelding van een schuttersfeest. In de opening horen we het aanbreken van de dag. Het haantje kraait. Even later luiden de klokken die de mensen ter kerke roepen voor een plechtige viering ter opening van het feest. Een koraalachtig gegeven met een dalende chromatische melodiek verklankt de alom tegenwoordige “mijnheer pastoor”. Dan klinkt de prachtige gregoriaanse melodie van het Veni Sancte Spiritus. Het geheel speelt zich immers af op tweede Pinksterdag. Na de kerk begeven we ons in een vrolijke optocht waarin de vogel wordt meegedragen naar het schietterrein. Er klinkt een gezellige mars. Dan horenwe het gebabbel en geroep van de marketentsers. Met hun zware en ook hoge stemmen praten ze druk door elkaar. De optocht gaat verder langs het huis van de oude schutterskoning. Deze trekt mee en voert zijn charmante gezellin mee hetgeen uiteraard een gevoelige muzikale wending teweegbrengt. Dan begint de wedstrijd. Er wordt lustig op los geschoten. Als het mis is wordt er gelachen is het raak dan komt er applaus. Als de vogel tenslotte is neergehaald is er een nieuwe schutterskoning en wordt er een feest aangericht. Horen we echter aan het eind toch nog niet even de vogel roepen?

The weather inspired Albert Dam to compose Weather Report. The three parts Windy (rock) Misty (ballad) and Sunny (calypso) want to make us believe that the weather will be changeable. Stable or not the music is solid as a rock.

The motivation for composing this test piece for the Concert Division Brassband of the 2001 WMC was Rob Goorhuis's deep respect for one of the greatest Dutch composers of the 20-th century who also enlarged the wind band repertoire in a most valuable way. Goorhuis wanted to light up the soft and kind side of the brassband and wrote about this composition : The basis is a theme of twelve tones wich Badings once played at an International Organ Improvisation Contest in Haarlem. My organ teacher participated in that contest and so the theme remained somehow in the back of my mind. The composer worked out a series of variations and clustered them into bundles ofthree and so the melody kept its diversity while remaining easy to recognise.

In ‘Land of Legends’ German composer Andreas Ludwig (what’s in a name) Schulte takes you along to the fictional world of legends myths and fairy tales. The introduction to the first part (The Castle) describes the majestic contours of the sceneof action. Its instrumentation (horns) immediately makes you imagine being in Medieval spheres. The addition of trenchant copper instruments even gives the part a heroic tinge. After entering through the gate a lot of hustle and bustle appearsto be going on in the courtyard. Pages squires and soldiers are busy attending to their arms. Beer is being brewed flax is being spun cattle are being tended and some craftsmen from neighbouring villages are busily at work. In the upperchamber of the round tower lives an old man (The Old Wizard). He hardly ever comes out and nobody knows exactly what he is doing. It is said that he is engaged in wizardry and magic. It is all very mysterious. There are also festivities some ofthem sober others exuberant. The wedding in the third part is celebrated in a grand manner. With a flourish of trumpets the bride makes her entrance at the hand of her father. Afterwards at the party there is dancing to the music played byminstrels and of course a plentiful banquet follows.

The atmosphere of the Wild West is caught in a striking and most imaginative way by young composer Andreas Schulte in this work. A caravan of gold- and fortuneseekers launch themselves into a big adventure and begin their rush westward. The first movement desciribes these first days of buoyancy and optimism in a crisp march. Near the campfire the pioneers rest themselves and the music expresses feelings of romance nostalgia for the past and hopes for the future. A wistful melody very characteristically communicates these feelings. Relaxation takes place in the third movement which is a musical characterization of a rodeo and its attendant festivities. It is obvious that sometimes something goes wrong and this aspect can also be heard. Nevertheless the valiant rider wins in the end. With a flashback to the beginning the journey is completed musically thus giving the composition a dignified finale. Let the mystic Wild West entrance you. (Wagons ho ....!!) De sfeer van het Wilde Westen wordt door de jonge componist Andreas Ludwig Schulte op een uiterst treffende en beeldende wijze geschetst. Een karavaan van goud- en gelukzoekers stort zich in het grote avontuur en begint de grote reis naar het westen. Het eerste gedeelte beschrijft de eerste dagen van opgewektheid en optimisme in een vlotte mars. Bij het kampvuur komen de pioniers tot rust en worden gevoelens van romantiek heimwee (verleden) en hoop (toekomst) muzikaal weergegeven. Een weemoedige melodie verwoordt die gevoelens op een zeer kenmerkende wijze. De ontspanning vindt plaats in het derde deel waarin een rodeofeest muzikaal wordt verklankt. Met een flashback van het begin wordt de tocht voltooid en de compositie waardig afgesloten. Raak in de ban van het wilde westen!

In English-speaking countries ‘Away in a Manger’ is one of the first Christmas songs to be taught to little children. It is a moving song with simple words which makes it easy to understand. The song is also known as ‘Luther’s Cradle Hymn’. This suggests that Martin Luther was the author of the lyrics. According to researchers however this is a misconception – the author is unknown. In England ‘Away in a Manger’ is sung to a different melody than in the USA for example. The ‘English’ melody was composed by W.J. Kirkpatrick. Andrew Mackereth made a touching arrangement of the ‘English’ melody which suits the tender lyrics perfectly.

The heat of South America radiates from this delightful cha cha which incorporates the exotic sound of Latin-American percussion instruments. This light and sparkling work will be the hit at your next concert!

Chester's musical pursuit has been depicted so well that it is a feast to perform and to listen to this composition. In his typical manner Blackstone succeeds in transforming an apparently musical phenomenon into a valuable orchestral piece which is attractive to everyone.
