In this work the Dutch composer Marc van Delft attempts to bring together two parties (former friends) after they have grown inexplicably apart. For this reason he calls in the help (Invocation) from the medium of music. At first 'Invocation' radiates a sense of serene calme from which the composer gradually creates an atmosphere resembling a conversation. Half-way there is an increase of suspense ending once again in calm. The listener remains uncertain however regarding the finish. Daaromroept hij de hulp in (Invocation) van het medium muziek. Halverwege is er een toename van de spanning die weer in rust eindigt. De luisteraar blijft echter onzeker over de afloop.

In Lord Tullamore composer Carl Wittrock shows us his vision for Irish folk music. The result is a diverse three-part composition of rousing Irish folk with a continental touch. Lord Tullamore reflects the full variety of the folk music of the Emerald Isle featuring not only brilliant technical passages but also tranquil sections of lyrical calm.

The Light of the World is an emotional and versatile piece based on the well-known hymn tune Aurelia. This arrangement by Dean Goffin will leave a deep impression on both musicians and listeners.

In ‘Land of Legends’ German composer Andreas Ludwig (what’s in a name) Schulte takes you along to the fictional world of legends myths and fairy tales. The introduction to the first part (The Castle) describes the majestic contours of the scene of action. Its instrumentation (horns) immediately makes you imagine being in Medieval spheres. The addition of trenchant copper instruments even gives the part a heroic tinge. After entering through the gate a lot of hustle and bustle appears to be going on in the courtyard. Pages squires and soldiers are busy attending to their arms. Beer is being brewed flax is being spun cattle are being tended and some craftsmen fromneighbouring villages are busily at work. In the upper chamber of the round tower lives an old man (The Old Wizard). He hardly ever comes out and nobody knows exactly what he is doing. It is said that he is engaged in wizardry and magic. It is all very mysterious. There are also festivities some of them sober others exuberant. The wedding in the third part is celebrated in a grand manner. With a flourish of trumpets the bride makes her entrance at the hand of her father. Afterwards at the party there is dancing to the music played by minstrels and of course a plentiful banquet follows.

Carl Wittrock's wide interest in global folk-music resulted in this concert-piece based on original African rhythms. Obviously the percussion section has a conspicious role to play but the band too may indulge itself in moments of thoroughly delightful excitement. The introduction depicts the awakening of nature and develops into a dance. The (main) motif of this dance is from a dance entitled Apollo and comes from Gambia. Its accompaniment consists of an ostinato pattern by balaphon-master Maudo Susa. The quiet middle movement is based on the rhythm of the 'gigbo' : a traditional dance from Ghana. In the final movement -which also bears a slight resemblanceto a theme from 'The Lion King'- the so-called 'Kono' rhythm is used. The work is played most advantageously using djembes. Challenge and please your percussion section with 'The African Connection'.

The pilgrim's song Deilig er Jorden can be called an international carol. The Norwegian text was written by Danish poet Inge Bernhardmann on a melody of Polish origin. A majestic carol! Therefore particularly suitable as an opening work for your Christmas concert. Optional with organ.

In a four-part composition Rieks van der Velde takes us to the richly varied area surrounding the university city of Cambridge. The Dutch composer was especially inspired by the atmosphere of Cambridgeshire the county which lies north ofLondon. 1. The Journey. Although on arrival the area looks peaceful and friendly the ruggedness of its inhabitants and landscape have an unmistakable influence on the music. In the course of the tour which starts with an Allegromovement we are shown the vitality energy and freshness of the Cambridgeshire countryside. Short themes swift and sudden motifs and rhythmical patterns supported by the drive of percussion instruments give expression to this image. Thefirst part is concluded by two Calmo movements in which the music expresses how the cathedral in the city of Ely comes into sight and is gradually approached. 2. Visit to Ely Cathedral. The famous Norman cathedral church of Ely whichwas built in 1109 has attracted tourists from all over the world apart from being a place of worship and heritage site. A cornet solo introduces the contemplative mood of the composition at this point. The mystical atmosphere of thecathedral runs through this lyrical part like a continuous thread. 3. The Pub. The thirst caused by this intensive journey makes a visit to the local pub a definite must. These “public houses” which may be open until the earlyhours of the morning offer all kinds of entertainment. Drinks are served liberally and the atmosphere is lively. 4. The Journey Back. Time has flown: In other words the moment of departure has come sooner than one would havewished. In a flashback which recaptures elements of the first part of the composition we say goodbye to Cambridgeshire in a fitting manner. Two scintillating final measures bring us abruptly back to the present.

A suite in three movements by Ray Steadman-Allen based on the Norwegian folk song P? Kl?rfjell der kvelver seg borgi sa rein. The work opens with the melody in the flugel horn and the theme is then developed and varied with many nuances throughout the work. The 2nd and 3rd movements are played continuously. The piece was commissioned by Manger Musiklag in 1988 and bears all the marks of the composer's masterly instrumentation. When the Rain is Coming begint al voor dat de eerste noot geklonken heeft doordat (eigengemaakte) regenmakers de komst van de regen al aankondigen. Hoe zwaar de bui zal zijn hangt af van de creativiteit en de activiteit van uw slagwerkers maar ookvan de weersverwachting.

In the year 1368 a rapacious character takes up residence in the castle of Rijnesteyn at Cothen. He is Johan bastard son of the Bishop of Utrecht.Round this now so peaceful castle eventful matters are enacted. In part one Johan and Willem Gulik of Guelders set out to do battle against King Charles of France. On their return in part two Johan captures two French goldsmiths in Hainault and incarcerates them at Castle Rijnesteyn. Part three is a musical representation of a courtly ballet in medieval style. The final part relates how Jan van Rijnesteyn goes to war against Hendrik van Vianen and Lord of 'Goy Viscount of Utrecht.Jan loots hispossessions and threathens to conquer all. In het jaar 1368 betrekt een roofzuchtig heerschap het kasteel Reijnestein te Cothen.Het is Johan de bastaardzoon van de Utrechtse bisschop. Rond dit nu zo vredig gelegen ridderslot hebben zich toen geruchtmakende taferelen afgespeeld. In het eerste deel trekt Johan met Willem Gullik de hertog van Gelre ten strijde tegen koning Karel van Frankrijk. De terugreis speelt zich af in het tweede deel. Tijdens deze reis neemt Johan in Henegouwen twee Franse goudsmeden gevangen en sluit ze op in de kerker van slot Rijnesteyn. Deel 3 is de muzikale weergave van een hoofs ballet in middeleeuwse stijl. In het laatste deel wordt verteld hoe Jan van Rijnesteyn in 1396 ten strijde trekt tegen Hendrik van Vianen en de heer van't Goy burggraaf van Utrecht. Jan plundert diens goederen en dreigt diens bezittingen te veroveren.
