This composition was commissioned by Koningin Wilhelmina Wamel on the occasion of its one hundred year anniversary. That it is a composition for xylophone and concertband lies in the fact that Harmony has a very talented young percussion player in the person of Barry Jurjes. The piece is both melodically and harmonically based on four notes (C - Dflat - F - G). The structure is divided into four parts: slow - fast - slow - fast.

David Well composed ‘X-mas for Three’ for three young pupils of his who wished to give a Christmas concert. He arranged six well-known Christmas songs for them and their first performance was a great success. This was reason for the composer to adapt the piece for ‘orchestra’ by adding percussion. The title has stayed the same and the work can still be played by as few as three musicians but as the saying goes: “The more the merrier”! ‘X-mas for Three’ consists of the following parts : 1. Franeker (formerly known as Froonacker) is a bustling city situated in the north of The Netherlands. Carl Wittrock wrote this challenging march in honour of the anniversary of one of the music associations of this city. A true asset for the repertoire list of concert marches!

A ballad that hints at Australia where its composer used to live for a couple of years. It was the friendliness of both its human and animal inhabitants that inspired him to write this little paragon of sonority destined to become a sure-fire crowd-pleaser. Its singing melody is accompanied by an altogether infectuous little motif.

Music that sounds as clear as a bell and is very suitable for elementary bands. Attention to the clap hands part where there are two rhythms played simultaneously. Tip: Instruct the audience that can participate. A short rehearsal is necessary in connection with the two-parts. Luck and laughter guaranteed!

There are no more good marches written today ? Ger de Mulder proves the opposite. Promenade is a robust and flashy march into the ambiance of all the great marches. The composer is an autodidact but he gives us a beautiful march with Promenade. Enjoy listening!

In this swinging composition the saxophone section plays a leading role. Composer and saxophone player Schulte knows better than anyone a swinging dialogue to create between the saxophone section and the band whereby the soloists also have some amazing solos.

The atmosphere of the Wild West is caught in a striking and most imaginative way by young composer Andreas Schulte in this work. A caravan of gold- and fortuneseekers launch themselves into a big adventure and begin their rush westward. The first movement desciribes these first days of buoyancy and optimism in a crisp march. Near the campfire the pioneers rest themselves and the music expresses feelings of romance nostalgia for the past and hopes for the future. A wistful melody very characteristically communicates these feelings. Relaxation takes place in the third movement which is a musical characterization of a rodeo and its attendant festivities. It is obvious that sometimes something goes wrong and this aspect can also be heard. Nevertheless the valiant rider wins in the end. With a flashback to the beginning the journey is completed musically thus giving the composition a dignified finale. Let the mystic Wild West entrance you. (Wagons ho ....!!) De sfeer van het Wilde Westen wordt door de jonge componist Andreas Ludwig Schulte op een uiterst treffende en beeldende wijze geschetst. Een karavaan van goud- en gelukzoekers stort zich in het grote avontuur en begint de grote reis naar het westen. Het eerste gedeelte beschrijft de eerste dagen van opgewektheid en optimisme in een vlotte mars. Bij het kampvuur komen de pioniers tot rust en worden gevoelens van romantiek heimwee (verleden) en hoop (toekomst) muzikaal weergegeven. Een weemoedige melodie verwoordt die gevoelens op een zeer kenmerkende wijze. De ontspanning vindt plaats in het derde deel waarin een rodeofeest muzikaal wordt verklankt. Met een flashback van het begin wordt de tocht voltooid en de compositie waardig afgesloten. Raak in de ban van het wilde westen!

The weather inspired Albert Dam to compose Weather Report. The three parts Windy (rock) Misty (ballad) and Sunny (calypso) want to make us believe that the weather will be changeable. Stable or not the music is solid as a rock. Het weer inspireerde Albert Dam tot het schrijven van Weather Report. De drie delen Windy (rock) Misty (ballad) en Sunny (calypso) willen ons doen geloven dat het weer afwisselend zal zijn. Stabiel of niet de muziek staat als een huis! Eight animals appear in as many different musical pieces. It will be just like Noah's ark as Bouncing Beetle Lucky Lion Groovin' Grasshopper Giggling Goose Hip Hap Horse Little Lamb Rocking Rhino & Amazing Ant pass by one after the other.

‘Circus Delight’ is a five-part suite which is set how could it be otherwise in a big circus tent. The suite starts with a part called ‘Entrance’. The orchestra positioned above the entrance of the ring asks for the attention of the audience and then the ring announcer enters. The show can begin! The elephants play a central role in the first act. These colossal grey animals are rather slow and perform their tricks in a moderate tempo. (‘Elephant Blues’) How different are ‘The Acrobats’. At high speed they run jump and fly through the ring until ....... It gets very exciting. Fortunately all’s well that ends well and they take their leave of the audienceat a trot. Everyone knows and yet it is mostly not spoken about that when a clown has taken off his red nose and rubbed off his make-up his face off-stage is not always a happy one. (‘Tears of the Clown’) The piece ends on a cheerful note with ‘The Parade’ in which all the artists make their entrance in the ring once again to gratefully acknowledge the audience’s overwhelming applause.

In ‘Land of Legends’ German composer Andreas Ludwig (what’s in a name) Schulte takes you along to the fictional world of legends myths and fairy tales. The introduction to the first part (The Castle) describes the majestic contours of the scene of action. Its instrumentation (horns) immediately makes you imagine being in Medieval spheres. The addition of trenchant copper instruments even gives the part a heroic tinge. After entering through the gate a lot of hustle and bustle appears to be going on in the courtyard. Pages squires and soldiers are busy attending to their arms. Beer is being brewed flax is being spun cattle are being tended and some craftsmen fromneighbouring villages are busily at work. In the upper chamber of the round tower lives an old man (The Old Wizard). He hardly ever comes out and nobody knows exactly what he is doing. It is said that he is engaged in wizardry and magic. It is all very mysterious. There are also festivities some of them sober others exuberant. The wedding in the third part is celebrated in a grand manner. With a flourish of trumpets the bride makes her entrance at the hand of her father. Afterwards at the party there is dancing to the music played by minstrels and of course a plentiful banquet follows.

Composer Peter Martin received his inspiration from the period of the versatile Henry VIII and the accompanying sparkling late-medieval music. At Henry's Table describes the atmosphere at the court of the English king. Music that stays with you because it is so special.

The German composer Schulte proves how easy challenging and melodically a march can be in Hobson's Choice. Surprising!
