Constructed between 1915 and 1928 the Tamiami Trail (U.S. Highway 41) provides over 260 miles of scenic Florida beauty between Tampa and Miami. On the Tamiami Trail reflects on this journey and pays tribute to the Suncoast Concert Band of Sarasota (along the trail) and its director emeritus Leo Laier. The opening fanfare sets the mood and leads to the energetic first theme. Calling for the band to be divided into four separate ensembles (and spread apart if space permits) Villages explores a wide range of harmonic and rhythmic interplay between each of these musical villages.The opening creates a dense canopy of sound out of which the unique identity of each group variously emerges then melts back into the texture. As the fast pace continues melodic fragments are bounced from group to group withinterjections from the percussion. A slower lyric section provides contrast before the frantic pace returns leading to the exciting conclusion. This unusual work depicts the transformation of matter from solid to liquid and eventually to gas. A single theme appears dense and rigid in the opening in the middle section lyrical and then in a turbulent finale it dissolves into tiny fragments.

Commissioned by Furman University for the inauguration of its 12th president Jay Bocook's Gloriana is based on The Faerie Queene an incomplete English epic poem written by Edmund Spenser and dedicated to Queen Elizabeth I. In the poem Queen Elizabeth is represented as the faerie queene herself Gloriana. This stately work for winds and percussion has a regal quality enhanced by soaring melodies and punctuated with fanfare-like brass figures.
