Concerto for Trumpet and Wind Band-The innovative Spanish composer Ferrer Ferran has taken Greek mythology as an inspiration for his concerto for trumpet and concert band. Hydra the water monster decapitated by Hercules and Iolaus terrorised the area of Lerna near Argos. The concerto is in three sections which contrast with each other. The first section is rhythmical and triumphant the second is calm and melodious and the last part provides an aggressive ending. A welcome addition to the repertoire for solo trumpet and concert band.

Preludio and Andante in Swing for Flugel Horn or Trumpet and Concert Band-This work is inspired by the famous Italian Renaissance painter Raphael and his magnificent paintings; at the same time it’s a very personal work for Ferrer Ferran who dedicated it to his own brother Raphael. The dedication pays tribute to Raphael’sgreatwork in the field of youth music education. Both Raphaels painter and teacher display huge devotion to their work which is beautifully captured in this composition.

Sinfonietta N. 3- El Misteri del Foc (Le mystère du feu) est la troisième sinfonietta du compositeur espagnol Ferrer Ferran. Cette œuvre contrastante est constituée de trois mouvements colorés espiègles pétillants dansants et mélodiques. / 1. Calixte III : Alfonso de Borgia futur Calixte III naquit dans la cité de Canals près de Valence en Espagne. Lors d’une rencontre avec Vicente Ferrer (Vincent Ferrier) un dominicain valencien et prédicateur illustre celui-ci lui prédit qu’il serait élu pape et qu’en tant que tel il le canoniserait. Alfonso de Borgia fut élu pape sous le nom de Calixte III et fit inscrire Vicente Ferrer parmi les saints de l’Église.Devenu souverain pontife son grand objectif fut la reconquête de Constantinople tombée aux mains des Turcs. Calixte III appella à une croisade pour libérer la ville. Après une première bataille victorieuse la croisade s’acheva par un échec cuisant. / 2. Els Canals (Canals) : Canals ses paysages colorés ses nombreux canaux et rivières et son sens de la fête nous invite à assister à la Fête de la Saint Antoine à la crémation du bûcher béni la bénédiction des animaux et la Festa dels Parells (La fête des parents). / 3. Foguera i Festa (Le feu et la fête) : Le point d’orgue de la Fête de la Saint Antoine est la mise à feu d’un immense bûcher de vingt mètres de haut dont la construction nécessite chaque année pas moins de 600 tonnes de bois (essentiellement du sapin). Le Feu de la Saint Antoine est accompagné des vivats des habitants qui rendent ainsi hommage à leur saint patron. La Fête de la Saint Antoine compte parmi les fêtes les plus populaires dans la tradition valencienne. Rassemblés autour du bûcher les habitants de Canals célèbrent cette fête avec enthousiasme.

Triptych for Alto Saxophone and Piano-Ferrer Ferran a dédié ce triptyque pour Saxophone Alto et Piano à Lino Blanchod musicien et chef émérite de l’Orchestre d’Harmonie du Val d’Aoste (Italie). Le troisième tableau de cette composition est également disponible dans une version pour Orchestre d’Harmonie sous le titre de Maestro Lino (IB 025-010). Recuerdos de España (“Souvenirs d’Espagne”) est composé de trois tableaux : 1. Playaballena / 2. Relais du Foyer / 3. Maestro Lino . Cette composition pétillante fraîche et charmante souligne à merveille le caractère espagnol. Évoluant sur un rythme ternaire évoquant les caractéristiques de la séguedille le troisième tableau s’apparente à laforme rhapsodique et développe une partie centrale écrite dans le style poétique de la copla (chant) où prédomine une mélodie typiquement gitane. Recuerdos de España séduit par son authenticité son caractère mélancolique divertissant espiègle et surprenant qui dévoile une harmonie de couleurs attirantes et des subtiles saveurs.

Pasodoble de Concierto-Consolat de Mar is an uplifting Spanish paso doble expertly crafted to make it an ideal concert opener. The introduction and the following runs convey the pride of the Spanish character. The trio develops a gentle melody that provides a nice contrast to a solemn march-like passage. Dance music at its best!

Pequeño Poema- La Escala Sido fait partie d’une série de petits poèmes musicaux que Ferrer Ferran a composés à l’intention des petits et grands musiciens en herbe avec un objectif précis : égayer et valoriser les débuts quelquefois difficiles dans le monde fascinant de la musique. La Escala Sido s’appuie sur la totalité des sept notes de la gamme.

Episodio Sinfónico-Taillés dans une falaise de grès rose sur la rive occidentale du Nil les deux temples d’Abou Simbel ont été bâtis sur ordre du pharaon Ramsès II. Associant le culte de sa personne à celui des divinités Râ Amon et Ptah Ramsès assurait sa gloire. Le grand temple d’Abou Simbel est l’un des mieux conservés d’Égypte. Dans le sanctuaire au fond de l’édifice se dressent quatre statues taillées dans le roc. Ramsès II figure ainsi de pair avec les trois dieux les plus importants et les plus vénérés de l’histoire de l’Égypte ancienne. La clé de voûte de l'univers complexe des croyances égyptiennes était la nature divine des pharaons. Descendants des dieux ils disposaient d’unpouvoir absolu sur la nation. Pour accréditer leur image de puissants souverains divins de nombreux pharaons firent construire des merveilles architecturales.La musique de Ferrer Ferran offre de charmants contrastes de couleurs. Les mélodies exotiques planent au-dessus des eaux fertiles du Nil.

Symphonic Episode ~ Episodio Sinfónico-Al-Manzah nowadays called Almansa is a town of Muslim origin. Its name comes from the Arabic word al-mansah meaning “the watchtower”. On a rocky peak above the town stands an impressive castle from where it is possible to admire the Spanish Levant(the Mediterranean coast of the Valencian region) from the Meseta (a high plateau in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula). This is a delightful and festive piece which is both pleasant to listen to and exciting to play.

Rapsodia Española- Maestro Lino est une composition pétillante fraîche et charmante qui souligne à merveille le caractère espagnol. Évoluant sur un rythme ternaire évoquant les caractéristiques de la séguedille cette rhapsodie développe une partie centrale écrite dans le style poétique de la copla (chant) où prédomine une mélodie jouée par la trompette. Fantasía obertura Española-Mont Serrat is a fresh and delightful fantasy overture. Its Spanish flair and bright colours make it an extremely engaging work. The music quickly reveals itself to be captivating and exquisitely pleasant. The triple-time rhythm reflects the typical elements found in the seguidilla (a Spanish dance) as this fantasy unfolds a sweet and poetic melody that is shared between the trumpet and saxophone. Mont Serrat is guaranteed to delight audience and musicians alike.

Ferrer Ferran raconte en musique l’extraordinaire périple du navigateur portugais Fernando de Magallanes (Ferdinand Magellan). À la tête d’une flottille de cinq navires Magellan quitte l’Espagne en septembre 1519. Persuadé que l’on peut atteindre l’Asie en contournant les terres du Nouveau Monde Magellan missionné par Charles Quint doit ouvrir la voie vers la route des épices. Il accomplira admirablement sa mission mais ne reviendra jamais en Espagne car il meurt au cours de son périple. Un seul des cinq navires de l’expédition rentrera en Espagne trois ans plus tard bouclant ainsi le premier tour du monde.

Sinfonietta no. 1-Ferrer Ferran s’est laissé inspiré par le caractère grandiose des montagnes et dévoile leur beauté et leur force inégalées. Écho de la Montagne est une œuvre en trois tableaux : La légende • La belle nature • La forêt fantastique / Le premier mouvement - La légende - raconte l’histoire d’une montagne magique qui existait auparavant et dominait le paysage alentour composé de collines boisées et verdoyantes. Mais un jour les collines furent changées en rochers dénudés de toute végétation laissant place à un paysage escarpé. Le sommet enneigé de la montagne scintillait alors de mille feux sous les rayons du soleil. Parfois (sans que l'on sacheexactement quand) la montagne se métamorphosait : la neige fondait et la montagne crachait des flammes et de la fumée mettant le feu aux bois et dirigeant des pierres brûlantes sur les Mapuches (un peuple du Chili). Deux tribus vivaient près de cette montagne et leurs luttes incessantes détruisaient l’environnement. Dieu força les deux chefs des deux tribus à regarder la destruction de cette montagne que leurs guerres avaient provoquée. Ils furent frappés d’une punition éternelle et changés en pierre. Depuis ce temps-là ils sont régulièrement couverts de lave incandescente ou de glace et sont condamnés à entendre les orages qui reviennent sans cesse. On dit que les chefs attendent en vain le jour où Dieu s’endormira pour qu’ils puissent se réveiller et venger leurs tribus. / Contrairement à la scène précédente le second tableau - La belle nature - reflète la magnificence de la nature ses odeurs et ses couleurs merveilleuses. / Le troisième et dernier tableau - La forêt fantastique - présente le monde imaginaire des montagnes et des forêts où nains et fées espiègles gambadent dans la verte splendeur des paysages.

Mvt. 2: La Sagrada Familia- The Great Spirit is a two part symphonic work that Ferrer Ferran dedicated to the famous Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi. Ferran depicts various stages of the life of this ingenious architect and master of round organic forms and shapes: fromhis humble beginnings to working on the Sagrada Familia which would turn into a life-long task. Mirroring Gaudi’s architecture the musical lines of Gaudi are fluid and organic the structure expansive rich in colour and spellbinding just like thebuildings of the great Catalan architect.

Pasacalle Español-The Spanish “Pasacalle” is a very characteristic genre of Spanish musical tradition. It resembles the march but is more majestic and represents the air of pretentiousness that is so typical for the Spanish male character of the sixties. This composition is not only an example of this kind of musical genre but it also reminds us of the most typical Spanish celebration of all - the bullfight. Take your audience away to a balmy summer night in the bullring with this great new paso doble.

Dolls and Marionettes - the dolls are echoed in a cheerful tempo and the marionettes in a waltz. The Doll House - slower and more cantabile. The Train - we hear the steam engine the steam whistle and the buzz of a tour in the world of imagination. The Tin Soldier - we hear footsteps far off coming closer the rhythm of the drums the energetic sound of the army. Dressed in uniforms and in straight lines they march in a perfect rhythm. Don Víctor a été composé à la demande de la Falla El Pilar de Valence en Espagne. Cette association culturelle est l’une des plus prestigieuses de la région autonome de Valence. Elle a souhaité dédier cette composition à Víctor Monzón qui en assura la présidence durant plusieurs années en reconnaissance de son profond engagement et de son inestimable contribution. Sous son impulsion la Falla El Pilar a été récompensée de nombreux prix et distinctions. Ce paso doble festif au tempérament fidèlement valencien évoque l’atmosphère des Fallas de Valence (la grande fête de Carnaval qui a lieu chaque année au mois de mars) et les festivités autour de la corrida.Un brillant solo de trompette apporte une couleur délicieusement espagnole. Il est l’exact reflet de la corrida la fête nationale par excellence.

Symphonic Episode ~ Episodio Sinfónico- Almansa was commissioned by the Sociedad Unión Musical de Almansa (Almansa Music Union Society) in the Albacete province of Spain to mark the 150th anniversary of the band (1858-2008). The piece was premiered on 29 November 2008 at Almansa’sTeatro Regio by the dedicatee orchestra under the baton of its conductor Juan Manuel Alarcón.Al-Manzah nowadays called Almansa is a town of Muslim origin. Its name comes from the Arabic word al-mansah meaning “the watchtower”. This melody is based on the contemporary name of the town Almansa: Al (La = A) - M (Mi = E) - A (La = A) - N (Do# = C#) - S (Si = B) - A (La = A).Anentertaining ballad built upon an asymmetrical meter in 5/8 leads to a singing motif and a pleasant harmony. The beginning of an Arabic dance leads to a great Moorish march one of conquest. The recapitulation of the opening theme brings a finaltouch to the traditional Hispanic character of this musical episode.This is a delightful and festive piece which is both pleasant to listen to and exciting to play.This work is dedicated to the members of the Sociedad Unión Musical de Almansa and itsdirector Juan Manuel Alarcón in recognition of his success and musical talent.

Cinq a Brass Sos (Five Episodes for Brass Quintet)- Five Embraces is a funny and seductive piece where Ferrer Ferran describes with great humor the five instruments of the classical brass quintet. A pun in its title the composer symbolizes a hug to five musician friends. The five movements of the brass quintet always interpreted this line.
