Hypochonriacus was written around 1949. It is scored for solo Voice with Piano accompaniment and sets a poem by Charles Lamb . It was a test piece for the National Competitive Music Festival held aspart of the 1951 Festival of Britain. Cecil Armstrong Gibbs was a prolific and versatile English composer of the 20th century. Gibbs is best known for his output of songs but he also wrote a considerableamount of music for the amateur choirs that he conducted. His reputation as a song-writer largely lies in his natural gift for text setting – he insisted on giving priority to the words over the music and had very clear musicalideas on what a song should be.

The German composer and pianist JohannesBrahms (1833-1897) spent most of his working life in Vienna where his influence and stature were unmatched during his lifetime. He was a noted perfectionist and often destroyed works he thought unworthy of publication.

Heart Of Oak is the official march of the Royal Navy. It was written in 1859 an Annus Mirabilis for British armed forces by the composer William Boyce with words by the actor poet andplaywright David Garrick (1717-1779). It has been arranged for SATB choir by the composer and pedagogue Eaton Faning (1850-1927). Dr. William Boyce (1711-1779) was a British composer and editor. Hewas a choirboy at St Paul's Cathedral and served as organist at several churches before being appointed Master of the King's Musick in 1755 and Organist of the Chapel Royal in 1758. His editions of English Church music are stillwidely used today.

Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) was an English composer editor and collector of folk music. He studied at the RCM under Stanford and Parry and formed a lifelong friendship with Holst with whom he wouldexchange critical views on each other’s work. He is best remembered for his orchestral works like the Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis and the Folk Song Suite but he also wrote many hymn tunes and carols.
