Called the Paganini of the clarinet by the English clarinet virtuoso Henry Lazarus Ernesto Cavallini was a respected friend and colleague of the most important Italian composers of his day including Rossini Donizetti andVerdi. From 1831 to 1851 he was principal clarinetist of La Scala. During that time he also toured extensively throughout Europe. In 1862 Anton Rubinstein appointed Cavallini to be the first clarinet professor of the St.Petersburg Conservatory a position which he held until he left Russia to return to Milan in 1870. Cavallini wrote his 30 Caprices in five volumes each including pieces for both technical and musical study. He wasintensely interested that the Caprices be not merely technical exercises but studies in style and phrasing: an introduction to the new expressive force of the new music of his time. With this in mind he made numerous expressiveindications in his etudes which went beyond the standard markings of crescendo diminuendo accelerando ritardando. These markings have been restored in this edition and also include translations at the end of thevolume. The noteworthy feature of this edition is the recording included with Charles Neidich's performances of the Caprices. Rather than clutter Cavallini's already expressively notated scores with still moremarkings this edition offers the recording as a window into the bel canto style of the etudes and as models of the kind of performance to which the student should aspire. Concerto for Violin and Orchestra Full Score-Adolphes concerto for violin and orchestra is inspired by the life of Joachim Prinz a rabbi in Berlin under the Hitler regime who bravely warned Jews of the Holocaust and saved many lives. Later in the United States Prinz became a friend ofMartin Luther King Jr. and an outspoken leader of the Civil Rights Movement. His remarkable voice is represented by the solo violin throughout the work.

Full Score-Peng-Peng Gong's Metropolitan Overture was a joint commission of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra. The premiere concert on May 22 2016 was both to open the five-year artistic collaboration between the two orchestras and also to welcome the grand opening of the Shanghai Disneyland. The work is a jubilant merge of Shanghai folk-music and Disney-style scores making it an excellent concert opener or encore. For Marimba Guitar Harp and Piano-This quartet for piano guitar marimba and harp was inspired by the writings of neuroscientist Antonio Damasio. In it the piano represents a human being whose lived experiences are mapped in brain areas that are represented by the guitar marimba and harp. Like the piano the other three instruments are polyphonic and so can map harmonic content as well as melodic and rhythmic content expressed by the piano in the first movement Lived Experience. This mapping is not passive but rather involves active contributions from inside the brain. The three remaining movements take the performer and listener alike through the journey of these mapped memories. Movements: I. LivedExperience II. Mapping III. Reassessed Rearranged IV.
