Muriel Herbert (1897-1984) was a British composer pianist and singer. She studied at the Royal College of Music where she met Charles Stanford and Roger Quilter. She wrote many songs for Voice and Piano in her early life as well as some instrumental and orchestral works but stopped composing after her husband left her in 1939. Her works were largely unappreciated until twenty years after her death but they have now quite rightly become the subject of a keen and enthusiastic revival with a growing fan base. The Lake Of Innisfree was one of her most popular works. It is a setting of a poem by the Irish poet W. B. Yates (1865-1939).

Scott's Sonata No. 1 For Piano (Op.66) is considered to be one of his finest compositions. Written in 1909 it is noted for its changing time signatures and is said to have influenced Stravinsky. It is scored in four movements: Allegro con spirito - Adagio - Scherzo - Fugue . Cyril Scott (1879-1970) was a British composer pianist and poet. His most popular works which he is largely remembered by today were written in the years preceding the Second World War however he continued to compose prolifically in the face of indifference from the outside world right up until his death at the age of 91. His music ispredominantly in the Romantic style and serves as a tasteful reminder of a bygone age.

With Or Without Pedals- In presenting this second set of Hymn Tune Preludes the composer has followed the principles adopted in previous volumes in that the pieces based on well known tunes are intended to help fill the need for simple and appropriate music to be played before the service. As before they have been kept well within the range of the average performer and can be played with or without pedals and if necessary on one manual. Keys have been chosen to balance with the corresponding tunes as given in 'Hymns Ancient and Modern' 'The English Hynmnal' 'Songs of Praise' 'The Church Hymnary' and 'The Methodist Hymn Book'.
