Blue Moon written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart in 1934 has had many treatments over the decades. Mel Tormé made a smooth hit version in the 1940s Elvis Presley put it on his first album in 1956 and The Marcels had a doo-wop hit with it in 1961 but ‘An American Werewolf in London’ was the first movie to associate this most romantic of songs with lycanthropy. This brand new arrangement by Simon Foxley & Christopher Hussey for SATB choir makes the evocative standard a welcome addition to the Novello Choral Pops series. The juxtaposition of melancholy and melodic creates a bittersweet atmosphere of love and lust perfect for a classicallyromantic addition to your choir's repertoire. Your choir's own interpretation of this standard will thrill audiences invigorating the already-long list of cover versions.

Nobody Does It Better sung by Carly Simon came from the James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me . Marvin Hamlisch and Carole Bayer Sager’s song marked the first time a bond song had not shared its title with that of the film - since the tradition started. It stood as an excellent pop song in its own right and has endured as Carly Simon’s longest-charting hit and the title of her greatest hits album. This choral version has been arranged for male voice TTBB choir with Piano accompaniment by Thomas Lydon.

Shadow of Paradise was written specially for Melinda Maxwell. The work was completed in 2005 the same year that she recorded the work together with Richard Benjafield (percussion) for the Dutton label. 'The work is based on the poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge Kubla Khan and I have attempted to capture some of the spirit of his highly evocative text in my music. It is structured in three main sections: the opening section (And ‘mid this tumult Kubla heard from far Ancestral voices prophesying war) is dramatic in nature with the oboe announcing two ideas - the first a high repeated note rhythmic pattern (later with multiphonics) answered by six differentlypitched drums and temple blocks and the second a short lyrical phrase mainly built on thirds. In the second section (A damsel with a dulcimer In a vision once I saw…Could I revive within me Her symphony and song) the solo oboe transforms the repeated notes and thirds of the first section into a love song underpinned by the percussionist’s vibraphone and crotales. A short reprise of the very opening leads into the final section (Beware! Beware! His flashing eyes his floating hair! Weave a circle round him thrice…) which mirrors the text with three short dances in chain form folk-like in character and increasingly climactic. A final reprise of the opening seems to suggest a violent end but the oboe’s echo of the love song answered by the percussionist’s crotales brings the work to a gentler conclusion.' Edward Gregson - December 2011 Instrumentation: Solo oboe Solo percussion (6 temple blocks 2 bongos 4 tom-toms vibraphone crotales 2 tambourines)

There exists already and abundant supply of original compositions and arrangements suitable for performance on large and comprehensive organs but many organists who have only a small instrument at their disposal in country churches often have some difficulty in finding short and easy voluntaries suitable for their own use and the instruction of their pupils. It is hoped that The Village Organist may supply this want so much felt by that valuable and zealous class of church-workers to whom the work is inscribed. The editors have endeavoured to bring together a collection of pieces which they trust will prove to be at once simple without being uninteresting and effective where the instrumental resources are limited.

Threshold of Night (a setting one of Kathleen Raine's Three Poems of Incarnation) was commissioned by St John’s College Cambridge and was premièred under the direction of David Hill in the College chapel on 25th November 2006. Written for Advent the work aims to highlight the yearning that all societies have in their time of need for guidance from beyond their community. By coincidence however this composition was completed on the eve of 29th August 2006 one year after Hurricane Katrina one of the deadliest in the history of the United States made landfall in Louisiana. Looking at Raine’s words in this context (‘Go back my child to the rain and storm’ ‘I will not go back for sorrow or pain’) the poem can be seen to echo the conflicted and anguished thoughts of displaced New Orleanians. The original Advent sense ofdesired guidance takes on a specific if unintentional significance with regards to the tragic outcome of that hurricane; this is emphasized by the bluesinflectedharmonies found throughout Threshold of Night .
