Cantilena was commissioned by the London Chamber Music Society to celebrate their move to King's Place in October 2008. First performed by Nicholas Daniel and members of the Chilingirian Quartet at King’s Place London on 5th October 2008. The work is a short lyrical piece where an outsider [the oboe] joins the group [a string trio] and adds to their dialogue. At first the newcomer is treated with a mixture of suspicion and agitation but eventually is made welcome. The oboe is invited to share the musical theme that has been established which he then proceeds to embellish and adorn. He leads the harmonic changes that result in the theme being heard in manydifferent keys. He then introduces a new theme. The excitement grows and leads to a climax. A peaceful coda re-establishes the original theme and all ends harmoniously among the integrated quartet.

The Festival Toccata is relatively well-known among the works of Fletcher and is popular as a wedding piece and for encores. The brilliance of Festival Toccata’s surface disguises the fact that one does not need to be a virtuoso to play it well and effectively.Percy Fletcher was an English composer conductor and Orchestrator of prodigious output who made his career in the lively world of the London music theatre of the years of the late 19th and early 20th century. He was music director at many theatres including His Majesty’s Theatre for the last seventeen years of his life. He was the Orchestrator and conductor for the big budget spectacular theatre piece Chu Chin Chowwhich ran for five years a record that remained unbroken for forty years. English composer Edward German was Musical Director of The Globe Theatre in London in 1888 when his incidental music brought his work to the attention of the public. The B.A.C.H. motif has been known and used for centuries but enjoyed a great revival in the late 19th century as composers paid homage to the composer J.S. Bach. It derives from the German nomenclature and is expressed in standard notation as Bb-A-C-B . The Fantasia And Fugue On B.A.C.H. is one of the most famous Organ works of Franz Liszt (1811-1886). The piece was intended for the inauguration of the famous Ladegast Organ at Merseburg Cathedral but sadly it wasn’t finished in time. Liszt then revised the work in 1870 and produced the version that survives today. A well-loved piece no organist’s library iscomplete without it.

The Fantasia for Organ has been described as both ‘fleshy in its Romanticism’ and also by the composer as ‘quite severe in parts’ an apt combination for the vast changes of the beginning of the post-War era.York Bowne was a British composer whose fifty-year career musical career spanned much of the 20th century. Bowen was not only a prolific composer he was also a pianist conductor Organist Violinist and Horn player. He premiered many important works and his own music was featured many times at the Proms among other concert series. Sir Henry J Wood believed Bowen had never received proper recognition and Camille Saint-Saens regarded him as the ‘finest of Englishcomposers’ early in his career. His compositional style changed little throughout his life so that his later oeuvre was less celebrated than his earlier works as music fashion had moved on.
