But Stars Remaining was written in 1970 for the English soprano Jane Manning. It sets lines from two poems by Cecil Day-Lewis bringing them together to create a scena lasting some seven minutes. It is an aubade or dawn love-song; it begins with outward extravert energy and moves to an inward intimate centre. It closes as the imagery moves out again to the expanse of the sky at first light.

Tarik O'Regan 's The Ecstasies Above was commissioned by the Robert Baker Commissioning Fund for Sacred Music by Yale Institute of Sacred Music and was premièred by Yale Schola Cantorum under the direction of Simon Carrington on 4th March 2007 in Woolsey Hall Yale University. The minimum number of singers required is 16 (two each per chorus part together with the solo voices); however a larger number for the main chorus (16-32 voices for example) is more suitable. The string quartet and the two solo vocal quartets should be placed in front of the chorus. The vocal quartets should be spatially separated from each other. Depending on thevenue and the size of the chorus the string quartet may need to be amplified.

The Prince of Sleep to words by Walter de la Mare is a languid setting capturing masterfully the absent-minded sentiments of the words; imagery of dreams and the natural world (especially woodland) always seemed to inspire Elgar . In the Summer of 1925 Elgar produced two songs The Prince of Sleep and The Herald and both were on the subject of death like their immediate predecessor from the year before The Immortal Legions and The Wanderer of the year before that. Michael Kennedy refers to the de la Mare setting as being “in the raptmanner Elgar reserved for special moments of vision” a view with which it is difficult to disagree. The part-song for SATB unaccompanied Voices is now available as part of the Elkin Choral Series. Performance time approximately 5 minutes. Piano accompaniment for practice only.

The Double Bass part for Michael Hurd’s Swingin’ Samson an enormously fun pop cantata. Divided into six sections this lively and toe-tapping show is fabulous for schools or amateur performance. Highlights of the cantata include the scene in a barber’s shop with a background of snipping scissors. This is followed by a splendid music-hall song where the whole audience can join in! The finale describes the Philistine’s party - set as a square dance - at the end of which Samson pulls down the whole building! Bring the house down with this wonderful 10 minute cantata!
