Mathias' third and final quartet was commissioned by the 1986 Harrogate International Festival and premiered there in August that year by the Medici Quartet. It has three movements: the first takes the form of a sonata the second starts off as mysterious and lyrical and moves into a fiery climax and the third uses exciting fugal passages and 'scherzando' sections which make for a thrilling conclusion.

This piece uses some melodic rhythmic and harmonic materials from the late piano music of Albeniz as a starting point. Erkoreka exaggerates or simplifies certain aspects of the tradition of Spanish piano music offering a renewed and personal vision by treating very differently the same materials that Albeniz used. Jaia means 'fiesta' in Basque.

The music moves through five short sections. It isn't until some way into the final section that Fat's Waller's song 'Ain't Misbehavin' the theme on which the piece is based emerges fully. This witty work is rhythmically complex and uses a great variety of piano textures. It is a sophisticated and challenging piece for performance by advanced pianists.

Dipolo is an exploration of opposites applying the duality of positive and negative charges to extremes of such aspects as dynamics and register in music. The effect is a work exploring the dramatic potential of both instruments.
