Arnold Clarke's Sonatina is a delightful piece which offers interesting musical and practical challenges for the Intermediate to Advanced Flautist. Scored for Flute and Piano Accompaniment.

The composer writes: The structure is a short set of double variations the two themes following a short introduction. One is flamboyant and rhetorical the other gentle and lyrical. The first develops rhythmically through a toccata to a vigorous dance the second becomes increasingly decorated so that the line is almost dissolved but finally emerges in its clearest simplest form. In a coda each musical character disappears into silence.

Worry Beads is an atmospheric and flowing piece for solo guitar. After a slow introductory passage it launches into virtuosic semiquavers which continue throughout much of the piece with fluctuating time signatures bringing rhythmic flavour.

This little impromptu was written in 1983 as a homage to Julian Bream on his 50th birthday.

The Flea was commissioned as a work 'suitable for singing in an informal setting and easily memorised'. It is a free and humorous setting of John Donne's poem in which the poet attempts to seduce his mistress.

The title is a clumsily literal translation of Brahms' Liebeslieder Waltzer and the work is in part a response to Brahms' wonderfully subtle invocation of the waltz. Like other pieces which are 'about' dance rather than to be danced to this is abstract music in which the characteristics of the waltz are immanent not explicit. The piece like its ancestors is in a way nostalgic about a lost dance form as well as reflective of the music of a century ago.
