Mozart wrote The Magic Flute as a singspiel opera in two acts in 1791 when it received its first set of performances in Vienna and from that time it has featured as one of the most popular works in operatic repertoire. This love duet with its stuttering ‘pa pa pa’ occurs almost at the end of the opera when the comical couple Papageno and Papagena finally are assured of each other’s love. It is a light-hearted excerpt appropriate for recital or encore.

Victor Hely-Hutchinson (1901 - 1947) was a British composer who was born in South Africa. He was recognised at an early age as a musical prodigy and could sing notes by ear before he could talk. His setting of Old Mother Hubbard was written c.1912 while he was still a pupil at Heatherdown Prep School. It is well-known for being a parody of Handel’s operatic style. Old Mother Hubbard was arranged for TTBB male Voice chorus by J. Michael Diack and first published in 1932. A timeless and amusing classic it is sure to go down well with any audience!

In 1834 Mendelssohn set the poem Auf Flügeln des Gesanges by Heinrich Heine and published it as the second of his Six Songs for Voice and Piano. It achieved a popularity that has lasted through the present and has been arranged for many instrument combinations. On Wings of Song is has the typical form of an early Mendelssohn lied in strophic form with a transformation in the final verse. The rippling accompaniment suggests the flowing Ganges to which the lovers fly ‘on wings of song’.In 1834 Mendelssohn set the poem Auf Flügeln des Gesanges by Heinrich Heine and published it as the second of his Six Songs for Voice and Piano. The Peasant Cantata was written and performed in 1742 as an act of homage to Carl Heinrich Von Dieskau on his becoming 'Lord Of The Manor'. The libretto supplied by Picander deals with the rejoicing of villagers and their congratulations and good wishes to the new laird and his wife. Many folk melodies are introduced and most of the numbers are based on merry country dance tunes.
