(1997) Composed as a prelude to the opera Jackie O (1995-97) Jackie's Song is an elegaic and expressive song without words in which Daugherty imagines Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis (1929-1994) as a solitary and melancholy figure after the assassination of her first husband John F. (1997) Daugherty's first work for symphonic band Niagara Falls became an instant classic upon its premiere by the University of Michigan Symphony Band conducted by H. Robert Reynolds in 1997. Niagara Falls has been played by high school university and professional wind ensembles all over the world and was featured in a highly acclaimed 2006 PBS documentary on the Falls. Inspired by the falls separating Canada and the UnitedStates this composition is another souvenir from Daugherty: a ten-minute musical ride over the Niagara River with an occasional stop at a haunted house or wax museum along the way.

(1998) Since its premiere by the Baltimore Symphony in 1991 at Carnegie Hall the GRAMMY®-winning Metropolis Symphony has entered the orchestral repertoire and been performed by orchestras all over the world.Arranged for band by Mark Sped under the supervision of the composer Red Cape Tango is set after Superman's fight to the death with Doomsday and is Daugherty's final work based on the Superman mythology. The principalmelody first heard in the bassoon is derived from the medieval Latin death chant Dies Irae . The band alternates between legato and staccato sections to suggest a musical bullfight. Madrigals by the Renaissance composer Monteverdi provided the inspiration for my own Madrigali . Symbolic images of flames burning and fire recur often in Italian love poems from this era and my cycle on texts employingthis fire motive blends stylistic musical features of the period (word painting modality bold harmonic shifts intricate counterpoint augenmusik etc.) within a contemporary compositional idiom. The music emanates from asingle primal sonority (the Fire-Chord) which opens the piece and is found extensively throughout all six movements in myriad forms and manipulations providing motivic unity to complement the poetic. This cycle ofmadrigals has been designated an American Choral Masterpiece by the National Endowment for the Arts. --Morten Lauridsen
