Louis Drouet (1792-1873) much admired virtuoso Flautist composer musical director and opera director was 'a Flautist of truly European standing and sphere of influence'. His method still forms part of today's standard teaching repertoire. The ' Little Sonatas ' published here for the first time as a separate new edition constitute the final part of Part 3 of his method. In accordance with the remarks of Drouet who had two different performance versions in mind the sonatas are available in two instrumentations: for two Flutes and for Flute and Piano. The Piano accompaniment with its figured bass realized by GottfriedBach has been turned into a harmonic accompaniment.

Joseph-Hector Fiocco (1703-1741) is regarded as one of the most important Belgian composers of the late Baroque era. The Allegro in G major was originally a movement from the Harpsichord Suites (Pièces de clavecin Op. 1 1730). The arrangement for violin and piano by A.Bent and N.ONeill in 1910 made the piece very popular particularly among violinists. The piece makes demands on the players left hand with its fast passages and virtuoso ornamentations and requires knowledge of all fingering patterns in first position. Occasionally it is advisable to use third position to avoid major string changes. The passage workconsists mostly of scale excerpts triads arpeggiation in thirds and sequences. The greatest challenge to master is the large number of string changes in a fast détaché which requires a flexible bow hand.

Kapustin's Twenty-Four Preludes op.53 were written in 1988. Clearly influenced by Chopin in their key scheme and brevity they present us with a great variety of jazz styles: blues (prelude 11) ballad (5 & 9) jazz waltz (18) swing (17 & 19) jazz funk (7 & 12) and even an allusion to Take Five (13). In many of them the composer states a theme and then improvises a new melody over the underlying chord structure. The whole set projects an ebullient spontaneity and it is fast becoming one of Kapustin's most popular works. The composer himself performing no. 11:

Fauré initially wrote the Sicilienne as indicental music to Molière's 'Bourgeois gentilhomme' for small-scale string orchestra. In 1898 he wrote an arrangement for violoncello and piano which enjoys great popularity and belongs to the standard Romantic cello repertoire.
