The most important aspect of the violin method 'Die fröhliche Violine' is the fun of learning to play the violin: The textbook is aimed at an early playful beginning with the instrument. Over the course of the lessons the pupils are deliberately addressed in a language that corresponds to their age. Furthermore the method provides a stylistically varied range of classical and folkloristic instrumental pieces and always gives a lot of interesting information on the music and its composers.

for string quartet- Song Recollections is based on the beautiful folk music of Taiwanese aboriginal tribes which I fell in love with many years ago. My good friends from Taiwan introduced these songs to me when I was a college student. I was and still am amazed by this magical music! My quartet treats each song as a musical landscape' through which one can travel'. To compose a work is very much like curating a journey for a listener to traverse through the song's inner terrain and sonic landscape. Lei Liang

(Four Cities)- Faz?l Say's Four Cities Sonata can be considered as a journey through four cities of Anatolia. This work has taken its inspiration from Faz?l Say's memories and events of his life. Bodrum is well known as a city greatly frequented by tourists which sets it apart from the other three locations. These four very different cities with their individual cultures have been selected from the nearly 2000-km wide expanse of Anatolia. SivasSivas is a conservative city located in Eastern Anatolia which is known for its large Alevi population. As¸?k Veysel is an Alevi Ozan (poet) and Faz?l Say has been inspired by his song Saz?m (my saz/myinstrument) in the first part of this work. The movement is concluded on a melancholy tone in imitation of this ethnic instrument. HopaA traditional wedding provided Faz?l Say with his inspiration for this second movement which embraces Eastern Black Sea culture. Horon is a very fast folk dance in 7/16 time which is played on the kemence a typical instrument of the Eastern Black Sea region. The music also touches on Caucasian Georgian and Laz dances anonymous songs Laz women and Cilveloy nanayda (a Turkish song). AnkaraAnkara was declared the capital city of Turkey by Ataturk in 1923. This city with its population of four million was where the composer was born and also spent his childhood. Ankara'n?n Tas¸?na Bak a rebellious song dating back to the First World War can be discerned in the mournful middle section. The movement with its atmosphere of tragedy evokes the republican spirit and the ambience of former times. BodrumBodrum is universally known as the Saint-Tropez of Turkey. A famous street in the city is fringed with countless bars and pubs from which a cacophony of different music can be heard ranging from jazz pop and rock to folk songs. Faz?l Say blends the sounds from these pubs in this movement which includes a walking theme in a swinging jazz tempo. The movement makes a

The melodies from George Gershwin's (1898-1937) musicals from 'Porgy and Bess' from orchestral pieces like 'Rhapsody in Blue' or 'An American in Paris' we all know them! But the career of the young musician started as a pianist in a music publishing house where he was to encourage customers to buy music by playing it. Soon he began to compose music himself and caught the attention of the Broadway which paved the way to his international career. Inspired by Frédéric Chopin's 24 Préludes he began to write his own 'Preludes' for the piano in the mid-1920s: Of the five preludes composed by him he used two for the violin composition 'Short Story' and presented the otherthree at a concert on 4 December 1926. These 'Preludes' combine classical moments and jazz elements into an effective whole and can be played individually or as a little jazz sonata (fast – slow – fast). Thanks to the present arrangement the charming miniatures are now available in a version for solo instrument and piano accompaniment.

The American composer and pianist Edward MacDowell (1860 1908) is rather unknown in Europe although he had his artistic roots there for he was trained as a pianist in Paris Stuttgart Wiesbaden and Frankfurt. After returning to his home country he worked as a teacher while also being the director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra for eight years. During his studies in Germany the musician already began to compose songs (with German texts) still in the European tradition. From 1886 he used English lyricism as a basis and preferred a sparing yet expressive accompaniment of the piano. In his last songs he placed special emphasis on the declamatory aspect of the text and expandedthe harmonic range of his tonal language. Of his 42 solo songs the present volume contains six titles from three of his song collections: Composed or printed for the first time between 1890 and 1898 these songs are a representative selection from MacDowell's important middle creative period and without doubt a valuable addition to the song repertoire.

Charles Dancla (1817-1907) is considered to be the last great representative of the French Violin School. He knew in a special way how to implement the principle 'no music without technique no technique without music' in his teaching material. This is the case in his easy melodic studies. These studies are perfectly suited for young beginners after the second year but also for adult players refreshers or outsiders. Most of them can be effectively used as little performance pieces providing an excellent foundation for every advanced étude or concert piece. Each study is preceded by new or revised exercises which either deal with specific problems relating to the playingtechnique or present the tonal material of the respective study in a condensed playful form. Those who prefer Dancla's somewhat easier original preliminary exercises will find them in the appendix.
