Buxtehude's organ music already fascinated J. S. Bach – and generations of organists ever since. Schott's urtext edition of his complete organ oeuvre in the renowned series 'Masters of the North German Organ School' is based on the sources taking the latest findings of the Buxtehude research into account. Unlike all previous Buxtehude editions this new edition by Claudia Schumacher follows the rhythm notation of the original i.e. the tablature thus providing for the first time the authentic version which enables the player to interpret the works in a differentiated manner. Volumes 3 and 4 contain a total of 48 chorale arrangements in alphabeticalorder of the initials of the chorales: Vol. 3 contains 26 pieces (A-L) Vol. 4 22 arrangements (M-W).

4 Interludes-The music of small forms was what the French composer Gabriel Fauré (1845–1924) focused on. In 1874 after many years spent in the 'provinces' the teacher of Camille Saint-Saëns took the position of organist in Paris; later he not only worked as a church musician but also as a teacher. In the summer of 1887 Fauré wrote his Pavane Op. 50 originally intended for a concert providing light entertainment which soon gained wide popularity as an orchestral setting with and without the chorus added by Fauré. The romantic slightly melancholic melody is a catchy tune which thanks to the present arrangement can now also be performed soloistically with piano accompaniment.

Fragment of the string quartet Silent Walls- 'Novelty of form selected modulations strange tone colours the use of completely unexpected rhythms' this is how Camille Saint-Saëns praised the debut work of a young colleague and continued: 'Above everything is a charm that surrounds the whole work and makes the mass of average listeners accept the most surprising audacities as something entirely natural.' The First Violin Sonata by Gabriel Fauré (1845 1924) was indeed an extraordinary composition which at the same time opened the way for the oeuvre of one of the most important French composers in the late 19th century and early 20th century: It was particularly with songs and pianomusic that he could win the heart of the audience. In the 1870s Fauré wrote three songs which were originally not meant to be a unity but were later assembled under opus number 7. The first song is ' Après Un Rêve ' a romantic rapturous song which like a 'Song Without Words' by Mendelssohn is perfect for making music with an accompanied solo instrument.

Schubert’s dance pieces are truly functional music for everyday use. As far as the development of the genre isconcerned they are immediateprecursors of the Viennese waltzes of Joseph Lanner and Johann Strauß the Elder. Schubert never danced despite his otherwise genial and sociable nature but he was a quite indefatigable improviser of dance music only too happy to play for his friends. The best of these ad hoc melodies now form a rich collection of waltzes ‘Deutscher’ (German dances) and Ländler (country dances).

Transcription-Jean Guillou did not change a single note for this arrangement. He just distributed the different parts to the manuals and the pedal in a way that guarantees a clear and varied registration in harmony with the architecture of the work and the fingerings and pedallings of difficult passages. The registration only serves as a suggestion since the ways of using the instruments are as varied as the tastes and views of the artists.
