Federico Ruiz finds constant inspiration in the rich popular and folkloric music of his country. No. 10 The little Peruvian girl is featured by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in their Grade 4 piano exam pieces 2013 & 2014. Clara has recorded these pieces on CD: The Music of Federico Ruiz - on Nimbus Alliance Records (Catalogue No. NI6179). They first met in 1993 and she became acquainted not only with his music but through it discovered the precision and the soft expressiveness of each of the numerous rhythms of Latin America and the Caribbean. His music is a sophisticated synthesis of Latin American styles that amongst manyother traits expresses the subtle interface between 'classical' and 'popular' music of the continent. Clara Rodriguez is often described as an Ambassador of Latin-American piano music recognising the great number of concerts she has given and CDs where this music features prominently. Born in Caracas Clara studied there with Giomar Narváez and with Phyllis Sellick after winning a scholarship from the Venezuelan Arts Council to train in London at the Royal College of Music. At the age of sixteen she made her debut playing Mozart's last piano concerto with the Simón Bolívar Orchestra under the baton of José Antonio Abreu which was the starting point of her international career as a concert pianist. Her discography includes CDs of the piano music of Venezuelan composers Moises Moleiro (Nimbus NI6104) Teresa Carreño (Nimbus NI6103) VENEZUELA (Nimbus NI 6122) receiving glowing reviews from international publications such as Gramophone Magazine: 'Clara Rodriguez makes the most of her innate feel for the exuberant and languorous dispatching the toe-tapping cross-rhythms with panache and a light touch. This is a treasure chest from which to cherry-pick.' She regularly plays in London's Wigmore Hall Southbank Centre St. John's Smith Square St. Martin in-the-Fields and at Barbican Centre. For Flute and Piano- Wilhelm Popp studied with the great Louis Drouet in the 1850s and wrote many charming works for the flute this among them. Susan Milan acclaimed soloist and teacher has edited this elegant edition. Susan Milan writes: 'I discovered the charming Popp Sonatinas Op. 388 while researching 19th century flute repertoire in the British Museum Library. They were first published in Hamburg in 1888. These beautifully crafted works are all without exception a delight to play and suitable for a broad level of player. They are a lovely example of Classical style and detailed in a way that makes them a joy to perform and as they are less than 10 minutes long they are aperfect addition to a short recital programme. In editing the Sonatinas I have tidied some of the articulation making the flute part consistent. Discrepancies between markings in the flute and piano part have been corrected. I have occasionally added some slurs where I feel the lyrical nature of a section might be enhanced shown as 'dotted' slurs. Where staccati appear to be missing I have added them. I have not on the whole added expression marks. I have not changed or removed original markings.'

Seascapes is Book 1 of 4 in a series of original piano pieces the others being Dreamscapes Nightscapes and Soundscapes . The music itself draws from a broad range of styles and is targeted to stimulate that most important region of the head - the ears. While the technical and musical expectations obviously increase across the books (Grade 1 to 8+) the emphasis is always on getting the most from the piano as a sounding instrument. Seascapes has a distinctly nautical theme - so plunge in.

Clog Dances Fom The Lanca-Clog Dances from the Lancashire Cotton Mills arranged for Two Violins (or Violin & Viola) with optional Cello. Clog dancing originated in the North of England over 200 years ago. It is thought to have developed in the Lancashire Cotton Mills where wooden-soled clogs were preferred to leather soles because the floors were kept wet to help keep the humidity high an important feature in cotton spinning as the nails in leather soles could cause sparks which could result in the risk of explosion. The Clog dance steps were inspired by the rhythmic sounds of the textile machinery and it is said to have first been danced by girls working in the cotton mills. Theywould beat out a rhythm with their wooden clogs to keep in time with the shuttle flying backwards and forwards across the loom. They would also sing choruses whilst stepping to the rhythm of their machines. There were a variety of machines in the many mills of the Midlands and North West each machine built for a specific function. There were many rhythms and as the girls clog danced it is said that those watching the dancers could tell which machines they worked at and from which mill. Clog dancers were also a common sight not only at the mill's lunch breaks but also at competitions in towns and in Music Halls throughout the 19^th and 20th centuries.
