Cello Concerto No. 1-Poul Ruders Polydrama (Manyfold Event) for cello and orchestra is the last part of a drama trilogy otherwise consisting of Dramaphonia for piano and 11 instruments and Monodrama for percussion and 32 instruments. In this abstract drama the individual listener is left entirely to his own associations. The composer has compared polydrama with the gradual defoliation of a big tree: the vigorously growing organism is attacked by a swarm of locusts until finally nothing remains but bare branches in a landscape of long shadows a solitary singing bird remains however like a streak of hope in an increasingly dark and pessimistic universe.Poul Ruders Polydrama (Manyfold Event) for cello and orchestra is the last part of a drama trilogy otherwise consisting of Dramaphonia' for piano and 11 instruments and Monodrama for percussion and 32 instruments. Trumpet parts in both B flat and E flat simplified piano part and a free CD including piano backing tracks and orchestral performance extracts. Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837) composed this concerto in 1803 for the keyed trumpet which had been developed by Anton Weidinger (1767-1852). Weidinger gave its first performance on New Year's Day 1804. Originally composed in the key of E it is more commonly played in Eb. The keyed trumpet was the first type of trumpet which could play chromatically but the invention was not a huge success: it suffered from a poor quality of sound. In the early 19th century the invention of the valve rendered the keyed trumpetobsolete. This edition is intended to be more user-friendly than the others currently available: there is a much easier (and dare I say more stylistic) piano accompaniment - any doubling of the solo part has been removed voicing simplified and my premise has been to imagine what it might have been before it was orchestrated rather than trying to cram in every last piece of orchestral detail. Suggested cuts in the piano part have been indicated giving a short introduction to each movement perfect for auditions recitals or exams. However the bar numbers still tally with the longer original versions which are included should they be required. The dynamics and articulation which I have added incorporate the weight of opinion in current editions and recordings offering more guidance than 'scholarly' editions without being overprescriptive. There is an appendix with suggested interpretation of trills and ornaments. Listening to as many different recordings as possible is the best way to assimilate good trills. The accompanying CD provides piano accompaniments and observes the suggested cuts. See page 38 for full track listing. There is free software available online (eg. speedshifter on the ABRSM website) which enables you to change the speed of a CD should you wish to practise slower or indeed faster. The Hummel

Per Norgard 's En Lys Time / A Light Hour (2009) for a variable Percussion Ensemble (min. 10 players). In A Light Hour everything - rhythms and motifs - is based on Norgards special infinity series . Parts available: WH30964A Programme note A Light Hour is for any number of percussion musicians' (but a minimum of ten). The duration is about 60 minutes. The instrumentation is in principle open as long as percussion is used within the three types specified in the score: skin metal and wood. Each musician uses two soundsources with two different sounds one of which is bright (or light) and the other dark. Certain passages also include tuned percussion instruments - vibraphone xylophone marimba gamelan glockenspiel steel drums crotales and the like. The work integrates and combines a number of rhythms that Norgard has used in percussion works since the 1970s for example in Early Spring Dance (for choir and percussion) and percussion works like I Ching Easy Beats Whirls Zigzag Nemo Dynamo and Echo Zone I-II-III. Special tone-feasts (the composer's term) - followed by a rest - are an recognizable melodic feature of the work.: the first minute end with a short tone-feast (and a rest) the first four minutes end with a tone-feast lasting a minute (and a rest) the first quarter of an hour ends with a tone-feast of four minutes (and a rest) - and the work ends with a tone-feast lasting quarter of an hour (and a rest when the work is over ...). The first 15 minutes have a bright light character throughout and alternate between rhythms and melodic play. The following 15 minutes are more insistent and decidedly percussion-based Afro-Cuban whereas the third quarter of A Light Hour moves in the

Piano-Bent Sørensen THE SHADOWS OF SILENCE For piano Programme Note The Shadows of Silence (2003-2004) Quite some time ago I heard - through a conversation in a mobile phone - a wonderful concert of ringing church bells from an European capital. I found it very hard to concentrate about the conversation because I was so engrossed by the chaotic world of bell sound. The night after I dreamt that the sound of those low singing bells was rising up from a piano in a huge empty concert hall. That experience became the starting point for my piano piece The Shadows of Silence. But before the piece gets to the ringing bells it moves through a landscape of shadows - Shadows of the silencebefore the bells - Silence before the storm - Shadows of melodies which all the time leaves traces even in the short passages of storm. After the passage with the low ringing bells the shadows of silence returns melted in to a lament which are sending two regards. One to two small beautiful - not very well known - bars by Mozart and one to the sextet in my own opera Under the Sky. The Shadows of Silence was commissioned by The Carnegie Hall Corporation and is dedicated to Leif Ove Andsnes Bent Sørensen THE SHADOWS OF SILENCE For piano Programme Note The Shadows of Silence (2003-2004) Quite some time ago I heard - through a conversation in a mobile phone - a wonderful concert of ringing church bells from an European capital.
