This is an artfully crafted setting of a beautiful poem by Matthew Meiklejohn. It is rich in contrasting material and many of the text's images are apparent in the music. The violin part contributes much to the setting and has moments of virtuosity amidst the energetic piano writing and expansive choral textures.

E - Parts-Short Cuts was commissioned by the Apollo Saxophone Quartet in 2003/4 and was originally scored for two sopranos one tenor and one baritone. This new version however asks for a different scoring of three Bb Clarinets and one bass Clarinet. The work's main purpose is to play with two possible meanings for short cuts. That is both with the idea of sharp and cutting musical gestures and the idea of taking a different shorter path to reach a specific destination. But most of all it was written thinking of the wonderful sonority and the rare qualities of the ASQ to whom the work was dedicated. Even more than Schoenberg’s or Webern’s Berg’s music made an enormous impact on me during the late 1950s and early 1960s when studying with Alexander Goehr. Work on this little piece was commenced on the 25th anniversary of Berg’s death and to commemorate the first performance of his Piano Sonata in April 1911 it was first performed in April 1961 by the pianist and composer Madeleine Coates Russell at a our own ‘society for private performances’ in London. Its shape is simple - a stage-by-stage progression from slow and gentle to a dense climax at double speed then a return to the spirit if not the material of the opening. Its public première the first of any of mycompositions was given by Susan Bradshaw at a Macnaghten Concert in November 1961. It was awarded Morley College’s Fricker Composition Prize. - Anthony Gilbert Recorded on Prima Facie PFCD007 'Piano Music' by Richard Casey/Ian Buckle. The Novello Barbershop series offers unaccompanied arrangements of a variety of well-loved songs from the 1940s to the 1970s. Arranger Nicholas Hare has endeavoured to share the interest among all the voice parts but each singer should be aware at all times of who has the melody so that it is allowed to stand out. A discreet use of soloists is often appropriate. Blend and balance of the harmony is another vital element in successful performance of this music and vibrato should be kept in check so that the chords are clean and perfectly in tune. The various vocalisations (ah ooh mm etc.) may be considered as suggestions only and variedaccording to the performance conditions. Arranged specifically for male-voice groups (from as few as four voices in some numbers to a full choir) the songs are notated on two staves for easy Piano rehearsal.
