Score- Karel Husa (b. 1921) is an American composer and conductor who was born and raised in Czechoslovakia. Pastorale For String Orchestra (1979) was commissioned by the American String Teachers Association for their 1980 conference the year that Husa was their orchestra’s guest conductor. The original material dates from around 1944 from a Sonatina for Violin and Piano – both of which Husa learnt to play as a child - but the intervening years allowed the composer to bring a new more mature reflection to the lyrical melodic lines and simple counterpoint. A beautiful masterpiece it will allow any string ensemble to showcase theirtalents.

This collection presents solo violin/fiddle arrangements from the Maggie’s Music CD Early American Roots by the Hesperus Early Music Ensemble. It includes a cross-section of popular American instrumental music from before andjust after the American Revolution including country dance tunes improvisations and shape note hymns. The dance music in this collection represents two basic genres of dance: country dances and cotillions. All the tunes inthis book are playable on the standard-tuned fiddle (violin). The tunes have been arranged in the order found on the album as much as possible. The curve occurs because of weight and energy of the space-time. Myintention was to create a beautiful projection of an image of the invisible curve into the soundspace. The second in Glass' trilogy about men who changed the world Satyagraha's sub-text is politics. The opera is semi-narrative in form and deals with Mahatma Gandhi's early years in South Africa and his development of non-violentprotest into a political tool. (Satyagraha is a Sanskrit word meaning 'truth force'). Each act is dominated by a single historic figure (non-singing role) overlooking the action from above: the Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore inAct 1 the Russian author Leo Tolstoy in Act 2 the American civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. in Act 3. The music from the conclusion of Act 3 has been beautifully arranged and adapted for Organ solo by MichaelRiseman and Donald Joyce.

Miniature Score. This work was commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. It was first performed on 13th May 1998 London. This piece is based on a genuine old tune 'Maxwell's Strathspey' which the composer found inan 1824 collection of Scottish melodies and which unfolds at the start of the piece on solo cello. Variations and a bold up-tempo to the quick dance we know as a reel ultimately yield to the magic that has been promised right atthe start: the northern lights take over at the end of the piece. Its inspiration comes from a walk to a community event in Hoy Hall during which Davies saw the lights in the sky pulsing in and out of time with the sounds comingfrom the hall. Duration 12 minutes. Conductor's score and orchestral parts are available on hire.
