With Rock Collection Etienne Crausaz offers a set of two original works and one arrangement: Rock Feel is a very lively piece with a lovely dialogue between the wind and percussion instruments; Go Down Moses is a rock arrangement of the well-known harmonically colourful Negro spiritual; and Music School Rock written in a minor key alternates a rhythmic motif and a quieter more tuneful melody. This collection of four-part pieces for ensembles with varied instrumentation is suitable for any wind band.

Spanish Fantasy for Trumpet (Cornet / Flugel Horn) or Alto Sax and Band-El Cid was the name of the legendary knight and folk hero Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar Cameador the man who never lost a duel. After a typically Spanish opening a slower section follows in which the composer makes reference to Albinoni’s Adagio and to the slow movement from Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto d’Aranjuez . The music is whipped up with Spanish passion at the close and castanets are a must! The solo part can be played by trumpet flugelhorn cornet or alto saxophone and is also available in a simplified version.

There’s nothing better on a sunny day than to take a turn on the Ferris wheel and look out at the splendid view from the dizzying heights. The composition Ferris Wheel Rock recreates this feeling and it’s arranged for a five-part flexible instrumentation that pays attention to articulation and the joy of playing. It’s perfect for a beginner concert band so take it for a spin!

We Shall Rise Again-The terroristic attacks in Brussels Paris Nice and Berlin shocked many people and lead to fear distrust and disbelief. To express these emotions Bert Appermont composed the beautiful and sensitive In Memoriam . He used parts of the song Au Clair de la Lune as a symbolic reference to the innocence that was suppressed by these events. He combined this with a lyrical melody which expresses the hope for a better world. In Memoriam is a touching and reflective piece for a concert.

It is a tradition that a concert must include a real classic march. Traditions are made to be kept. This is also true of our German neighbours. Reiner Lüghausen obtained his inspiration from the German march literature.

Duke Ellington (1889- 1974) was a very successful American pianist conductor composer and arranger. His orchestra existed for decades and was able to survive thanks to the enormous hits that he and his collaborators wrote. Many of those songs now belong to the standard repertoire of jazz musicians.Billy Strayhorn (1915-1967) was arranger and composer with the orchestra from 1939 and also wrote Take the A-Train which became the band’s favourite song from 1941. Many recordings were made of it. Juan Tizol (1900-1984 valve trombone) played with Duke Ellington almost his entire career and composed Latin songs for the orchestra. He is co-composer of Caravan and Perdido.Just likein the original Duke Ellington concerts the medley begins with Take the A-Train followed by a number of classics from the repertoire of the legendary orchestra. In some songs there are soloists notable a solo on kettledrums in C- Jam Blues. This solo can also be improvised.When rehearsing a lot of attention has to be paid to the drum and bass which together form the rhythm section and drive the orchestra on. The other sections have to be tight and create a coherent swing effect. The swing shouldn’t be too stiff and can vary per song. For example in In a Sentimental Mood the melody can be played almost straight (classically) while the rhythm section continues swinging.

Juri Briat has made a daring arrangement of this spectacular film score. Through his skilful instrumentation the sound of this work closely resembles that of the original version for a symphony orchestra. In this arrangement Juri Briat has combined dazzling brass passages with virtuoso woodwinds and saxophones. A challenge for any band with ambition.

Reiner Lüghausen composed this march in the early Seventies and it has never before been published. He gave the work this title because he actually comes from the valley of the same name in Germany. The most important sources of inspiration were the typical American military marches the undertones of which you will certainly recognise.

Overture Marziale-The name Aldacum (alder wood) dates from the period of the Roman occupation and is the Latin name of the brewing town Alken in the Belgian province of Limburg. The Koninklijke Harmonie Sint-Aloysius of Alken commissioned this concert march; the occasion was the 100th anniversary of the concert band. Aldacum is stylistically reminiscent of John Williams’ film scores and will surely also appeal to a wide audience.

As performed by The Corrs-The Corrs are a well-known contemporary Irish band. They take Irish folk tunes and dress them up with pop rock and Celtic influences. They also use a mix of contemporary and traditional instruments to create interesting sounds. Lough Erin Shore is one of their biggest hits to date and can become one of yours as well!

The Celtic poem The Voyage of Bran was the inspiration for this fantasy work by Bert Appermont. The subject of this composition is Febal who - together with his companions - travels to the ‘otherworld’ also known as the Island of the Blessed where he finds nothing but sun and prosperity. The sections called Isle of Joy Land of the Women and The Feast intermingle with Song of the Otherworld which acts as a sort of leitmotif.

Eleanor Rigby - We can Make it Out - Get Back - Hey Jude-The Beatles the most timeless and legendary pop group ever made history with an endless series of world hits that are still loved today. Filip Sandras has made a fluent arrangement out of Eleanor Rigby We can Work it Out Get Back and Hey Jude that can be played by every orchestra.

One very tiny “pop“ in space resulted in one very big bang that created a vast amount of energy from which life eventually sprang. The Big Bang also starts with that a big bang! The music then begins its journey through timbre and tone colours starts developing melodies complementing rhythms and interesting chords that all represent the creation of something new. Strong dissonances hint at the turmoil that existed while moments of beauty signify balance arriving at various parts of the universe. These contrasting events create a very engaging and exciting musical montage of The Big Bang and what happened next.

Dance from The Danserye Suite-Tylman Susato (approximately 1500-1561) was an accomplished Flemish composer musician and music publisher. He composed numerous works and published several collections among them Danserye (1551) the third volume of his Musyckboexken which contained his own four-voice airs and dances. Several of these were inspired by traditional Flemish airs. Renaissance scholar Manu Mellaerts has created a graceful arrangement of the most famous pieces from La Mourisque.

This grand work contains four contrasting movements. The first movement Prelude takes the form of an overture: it raises the curtains and marks the beginning of the piece. The brilliant motifs of the opening are contrasted by a calmer and more lyrical central section after which the triumphant opening returns for the movement’s end. The second movement Meditation explores the intimate sounds of the oboe as well as those of the flute and French horn backed by a rich orchestral accompaniment. The third movement presents a more upbeat Procession but not a Procession of the Nobles as written by Rimsky-Korsakov. Quite the opposite Procession resembles a “second line”procession from New Orleans whose up-beat rhythms invite everyone to dance in the streets rather than the measured pacing of a march. Divertimento ends with a Hoedown the tradition American folk dance idiom when the band has the opportunity for both vivacity and virtuosity and may play as fast as it can. It is important to play all four movements with precision clarity and most importantly enthusiasm.

This symphony is the most important work of Spanish composer Teo Aparicio-Barberán. The 2002 International Contest for Bands Ciudad de Valencia one of the most prestigious competitions in Europe marked its first public performance. Throughout the work which consists of three movements the composer uses a modern musical vocabulary and combines strong melodic instrumentation with impressive rhythmic passages. Asgard is based on a Scandinavian romantic narrative in the light of the ancient Germanic Sagas.…where the flowery landscape remains in that sweet-scented season where spring is always on the brink of summer. Its fields resemble smooth green lawns(maintained by the grazing red cattle and woolly sheep) and its forests are home to deer and songbirds. The area is protected by an unsurmountable stone wall and is impossible to enter except by the grace of Odin. It is here at High Nest in Val-hall that Odin sits on his throne and surveys all those in his dominion.

Juri Briat has arranged the tunes of the winter Olympic games of the Eighties for a wind orchestra. As always he has chosen original works and arranged them in his own typically colourful way. An ideal opening number for your concert with allure.

This work was originally written as the introduction tune for the wind orchestra programme Plaza Mayor on the Spanish National Radio.
