Spanish Fantasy for Bb Trumpet (Bb Cornet / Bb Flugel Horn) or A. Sax and Band-El Cid was the name of the legendary knight and folk hero Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar Cameador the man who never lost a duel. After a typically Spanish opening a slower section follows in which the composer makes reference to Albinoni's Adagio and to the slow movement from Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto d'Aranjuez . The music is whipped up with Spanish passion at the close and castanets are a must! The solo part can be played by trumpet flugelhorn cornet or alto saxophone and is also available in a simplified version.

Le Gratie d'Amore- The Graces of Love (Le Gratie d’Amore) is the title of a book published in 1602 by Cesare Negri the famous dance master of the Milan court in the Renaissance. It contains numerous dance tunes and precise descriptions of courtly dances. It also includes the tune Il bianco fior (The White Flower) on which the first movement of the present piece is based. A vigorous dance in three-four it leads to an acceleration and a sudden shift to an even meter towards the end. The second movement calm and contemplative in character features the tune Vaghe bellezze ... (Veiled Beauty …). Widely spaced melodic parts surround two solos during which the tune is variedand developed. Finally the third movement contains a saltarello with a hypnotic rhythm ending the work with flair and gusto.

Nature is presented in this poem as an all-powerful and nameless force but also as a creative energy and a mirror on man’s soul. This magnificent choral from Bert Appermont begins very slow. The different groups of instruments play the same theme and lead to a big climax. After that the instrumentation gets smaller to end in a silent way.

Friendly Takeover was composed for the 2016 Swiss Wind Band Convention in Montreux. In this three movement piece the composer experiments with lyrical motives combined with rhythmical pulses in different meters throughout the piece. In the finale the musical scene is taken over completely by groove-based rhythms. This takeover however is of a friendly nature as the various beats are not being conceived as rivals of the lyrical motives but are rather supposed to infuse energy and vitality to the latter. Thus one gets the impression of an ongoing acceleration throughout the piece.

Concertino for Euphonium and Concert Band- Bliss is one of the most spectacular euphonium solos around. It was commissioned by the euphonium virtuoso Steven Mead. This two-part concerto brings all the characteristics of the instrument into the spotlight: it contains a slow colourful section that resembles a typical English air in which the full round warmth of the instrument is revealed followed by an extremely virtuoso dynamic fast movement. A great one for any soloist looking for a challenge!Solo: grade 6

from the Opera The Night before Christmas-Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) composed his opera The Night before Christmas in 1894-95. The premiere took place on December 10 1895 in St. Petersburg. The libretto to the opera came from Rimsky-Korsakov himself and is based on a tale by Nikolai Gogol which some years earlier had already served as operatic material for Pjotr Tchaikovsky. The opera tells the story of Vakula the blacksmith of a small Ukranian village. He is madly in love with Oxana who demands - as proof of his love - a most unusual Christmas present: the magnificent slippers of the Empress. Knowing full well that in normal circumstances he would never be able to fulfil Oxana’s wish Vakula seekssupernatural assistance and finds it in the shape of the devil who comes up with a ploy to help him. The devil carries him on his back to St. Petersburg where during a lavish reception at court Vakula finds an opportunity to present his request to the empress. The Empress actually agrees to Vakula’s wish and hands over her slippers to him. Thereupon he returns to his own village. Here in the meantime he had been given up for dead and Oxana had been plunged into great sorrow as she had come to realise that she also truly loved Vakula. In the end however all misunderstandings are resolved and all adversities overcome: Oxana receives her extravagant present the lovers are united and the church bells call the villagers to the Christmas service.The vibrant Polonaise is played in the 3rd act of the opera at the entrance of the Empress whose appearance is anticipated in the prelude by the fanfare motives. The music paints a vivid picture of the party atmosphere and the marvellous décor at the imperial court of St. Petersburg which Rimsky-Korsakov conjures up in his opera and which can also be played outside of the Advent and Christmas season for example as an opening piece to any festive concert.

for Solo Bb Euphonium and Brass Band- For a Flower is a very melodic and virtuosic solo work for euphonium and brass band. It opens with a gentle solo introduction on euphonium which develops into a grand hymnal theme. Following this comes a faster and more virtuosic section in a traditional Irish style with a varied dialogue between the band and the soloist. The work closes triumphantly with the hymnal theme of the opening. For a Flower showcases both the musical and technical capabilities of this wonderful instrument. The euphonium soloist must naturally master both skills: lyrical playing and virtuoso playing. For a Flower was commissioned by the Dutch euphonium virtuoso Robbert Vosand is dedicated to his wife Evi.

The magnificent concert march Aurum (lat. gold) was written on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the cunductor of the municipal band of Wolfach in Baden-Württemberg Germany. The march begins with a light and playful theme. Thefollowing lyrical trio provides a contrast with its nod to Edward Elgar. After a number of key changes the introductory theme returns in canon. Finally the music heads to a majestic finale in which the trio theme is played as a splendid baroquechorale.

Force a Superbe Mercy a Foible-This brilliant concert march was written to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the founding of ‘Les Voltigeurs de Québec’. The title of the work refers to the emblem of this Canadian regiment in which both the cross and the crown are depicted. This piece aims above all to express the joy of this special anniversary. The melancholy trio section brings to mind more turbulent times and the trials and tribulations that the regiment has experienced at various points of its history.

for Trombone and Brass Band-This work was written especially for the Belgian trombonist Ben Haemhouts and was created on Dec. 29 1998 in Ravels. Colors for trombone is a virtuous composition based on four colors Yellow Red Blue and Green. Each Color characterizes a typical musical quality. This masterpiece of Bert Appermont is undoubtedly a superb addition to the trombone repertoire!

The introduction depicts the take-off which is then embellished by the following section marked ‘energico’.The second movement is an attractive setting of the flight itself. The slow section depicts a star-filled night sky. The close presents the landing at dawn: the flight is over.A beautiful and exciting musical journey!
