This composition paints a picture of brave Vikings sailing over the open seas invading foreign lands and terrorising the locals. The Vikings were well known for their cruelty and brutality but equally for their strong sense of honour and their pride. It is these last characteristics above all that are depicted in this work.After a short introduction the lofty main theme is heard accompanied by sombre drum sounds. A brief idyllic passage follows that evokes a beautiful landscape. Gradually a heroic melody is revealed leading to a great tutti in which the rousing main theme is heard once more. Return of the Vikings closes with the sound of heroic brass and festivechords.

Jan Moretus (1543-1610) was a book printer and publisher in his native city of Antwerp. He worked as assistant to his father-in-law the renowned master printer and publisher Christoffel Plantijn. After Plantijn’s death in 1589 Moretus took over the business.The composition Moretus consists of four parts that draw on the remarkable personality of Jan Moretus aswell as the printing business. In both the titles of the movements and the thematic structure we can see a certain symmetry: a playful allusion to the process of printing.Part 1 A Celebrated Gentleman describes the illustrious figure of Moretus in a festive chorale. In the second part ExpressiveImpressions the printing press itself is brought to life in repeated motifs - despite the industrial mechanical nature of the process the product always has an artistic and cultural dimension. In the third part Impressive Expression the wind band is invited (or challenged) to intone the slow theme with a poignant expressiveness. Part 4 A Gentle Celebration is a celebratory finale with a fresh theme.

The small garrison heroically resists the Sultan for as long as they can but in the end must surrender to his sheer numbers. After the dust settles word gets out that the Sultan is in fact no longer alive! The news was kept secret to preserve the troop’s morale. ‘Canzun’ is the Rhaeto-Romanic term for ‘song’ or ‘chant’. The work Canzun is based on two songs from the folk tradition of the Alps. In the middle movement we hear the Canzun della Sontga Margriata an old song from the Bündner Mountains about the legend of Saint Margriata. At the beginning and the end of the composition motifs from a Maria hymn from Vorarlberg can be heard. Thus two songs from neighbouring Alps regions are connected and developed together creating lively dynamic sections as well as lyrical lofty passages. The strength of the concert band gives room to wide expressive melody lines in many contrasting sound colours.

subTERRA tells the story of a miner who miraculously survives the collapse of a mine shaft. The work consists of five movements:1. The Dream: A horrible nightmare plagues the miner. Dissonances and unusual sounds foreshadow the imminent disaster.2. The Work: The rhythmic second part describes the daily grind of a miner from driving into the mine shaft to working deep underground.3. The Accident: Suddenly a piercing alarm is heard. Everyone tries to escape the mine amidst the ensuing chaos as the mine shaft collapses trapping the unfortunate miner.4. Hope: Buried under rubble and debris the miner regains consciousness. A prayer can be heard.5. The Rescue: A powerfulmaestoso symbolizes the successful rescue and survival of the trapped miner.

This musical fairy tale takes place during the middle ages in England at the court of King Arthur and his knights of the round table. Bert Appermont wanted to cast knights castles and princesses as the lead role and let young bands andsmaller/incomplete ensembles enjoy this rich fantasy.

from Piano Sonata No. 8 in c minor Op. 13-This beautiful melody may well be one of the most delightful solo piano pieces ever and over the years has been arranged for many line-ups. In this arrangement Georges Moreau wanted to stay as close to the original as possible. He has given the passionate aspect of the melody absolute priority and it is supported by a straightforward accompaniment.
