The Epic of Gilgamesh was found in the middle of the 19th century written on 25 000 clay tablets. After an extensive study of the tablets this old Sumerian epic was translated even though many of the tablets were never found. The epic was a source of inspiration for Bert Appermont to write his first sensational symphony.

Fanfare for a Friend was originally composed as an introductory piece for the brass ensemble Musica Mosana and their conductor Mark Prils. The work begins with a brilliant brass fanfare that presents the main theme for the first time. This stately theme can be heard in counterpoints throughout the first 28 bars. This is followed by a contrasting and rapid part whereby a melodic theme can be heard against a more rhythmic accompaniment. A virtuoso and sweeping passage then leads to the grandioso in which both themes are played simultaneously in a grand finale.

This work was commissioned by the Koninklijk Vlaams Conservatorium (Royal Flemish Conservatoire) of Antwerp and is dedicated to the flautist Aldo Baerten. Its first performance took place on 15 March 2006 in the Blue Hall (Blauwe Zaal) of thedeSingel International Arts Centre featuring Aldo Baerten and the orchestra of the Antwerp Conservatoire.--Silver glow--It is night. The Queen of the Adriatic is bathing in a silver glow from the full moon. The old city seems to beunder a magical spell. In the distance the bells of the Campanile di San Marco can be heard. Echoes of the murmuring water from scores of narrow canals resound through the narrow streets... Venice seems to be lost in a deep sleep. Or is it?--Secretsof the Doges Palace----St. Marks Square is shrouded in a gloomy silence. The grim architecture of theProcuraties and the Doges Palace dominates the deserted square. What secrets are hidden behind these facades? How manyprisoners were really tortured here after they had seen daylight for the last time on the Bridge of Sighs? How many stories have been waiting to be told for centuries? Will the Doges ever divulge this mystery?--The Four Horses--A fewmetres further along four imposing horses guard the gate of St. Marks Basilica. Their bronze coats gleam in the moonlight and it looks as if they are about to jump down. They were created in the fourth century to adorn the ConstantinopleHippodrome but during the fourth crusade in 1204 they were stolen and brought to Venice where they became the symbol for the four Biblical Evangelists. As the mysterious origin of the most famous horses of Venice always seems to symbolise thefigure 4 The Four Horses is entirely based on the quart as musical interval. Behind the horses the heavenly interior of the basilica is revealed where thousands of glittering mosaics strive to reflect the moonlightthat shines through the windows. A new world opens in an ethereal silence...--Epilogue - Silver glow--Outside the moon is still high in the sky. The magic of the worlds most romantic city seems to have become even more powerful...

Richard Strauss (1864-1949) is mainly known for his symphonic poems such as Don Juan Also Sprach Zarathustra Ein Heldenleben ... However he also wrote many operas and “Der Rosenkavalier” (created in 1911 in Dresden) with a libretto by Von Hofmannsthal is probably the most popular of them all. In our “Jan Cober Series” we would like to present this very special arrangement of the suite from “Der Rosenkavalier”. Jan Cober worked extensively on this arrangement and carefully composed this new suite. In this respect he preserved the necessary mood and vitality of Strauss’s music so it could be played by a brass band. He has done this without losing sight of the musicaltension of the original.

Gustav Mahler is probably one of the most important composers of late Romanticism. His symphonies are emotional extravaganzas of hectic near neurotic movements on the one hand and extremely beautiful melodies and wonderful choral music on the other hand. This Adagio from his 6th symphony which has been arranged in a majestic way by Georges Moreau is a perfect example.

Symphony No. 0 was commissioned by the Koninklijke Harmonie St. Cecilia from Zele Belgium on the occasion of its 175th anniversary. Phoenix ex cinere suo renascitur (the Phoenix will rise from its ashes) is the motto of this windorchestra. The mythical bird also takes pride of place in the orchestras banner. The mythology of several continents includes similar stories about a phoenix arising from its ashes. This work by Bart Picqueur is based on the Egyptian and Greekversion. In ancient Egypt the Phoenix occurred in the ritual of Ra the sun god.Part 1: Fanfare for Ra the sun god:After a mysterious introduction the orchestra bursts out with resounding trumpets and exceptionally virtuoso kettledrums. It is afestive ode to the sun god.Part 2: At the source - Song and dance of the PhoenixThe Phoenix lives a solitary existence at a source somewhere in Persia. His song and dance are of such a beauty that Ra the sun god stops his chariot every day at noonto enjoy the bizarre spectacle. Part 2 opens with an impression of the source with a modal sound field of clarinets and piano. The song is melodious and sounds slightly oriental. The dance is capricious and virtuoso.Part 3: Death and rebirthWhen thePhoenix has grown old he arranges his own death. He makes a nest out of incense and other fragrant herbs in the highest tree. When he has settled down in it the sun sets the nest on fire. The old Phoenix perishes in the flames. A young strongPhoenix is born (reborn) from the ashes.Part 4: Flight to Heliopolis - ceremony for RaThe young Phoenix wraps the remains of the nest of its father in an egg of myrrh. As soon as he is strong enough to carry it he takes it to Heliopolis (the city oflight which still exists near Cairo) where he sacrifices it in the temple of Ra. The work ends with a chorale in honour of St. Cecilia the patron saint of numerous musical societies. The majestic final chord however is not what is seems. It allstarts again from the beginning the circle is complete (just as the number of the symphony).
