Bagatelle means something like triviality or small matter. Despite the constantly varying times this composition - based on a single theme - sounds particularly light. The theme is introduced in its natural form first followed by some variations that lead to an uncomplicated canon. This charming interlude is fitting for every concert programme.

Townscape was composed for the centenary of the St. Cecilia concertband from Oudenburg a town which also inspired the composer throughout this work. The first part depicts a train slowly approaching from afar and then vanishing into the distance again. This is rendered by a sort of repetitive pulse in the music. This is followed by some serious action with jet skis on the Sinnesael lake. Their spectacular twists and turns are transformed into an exuberant theme and a middle section with several changes of time signature. After that comes a restful lyrical Nocturne a musical painting of the mill at night. The work concludes with a lively finale that is an ode to dailylife in Oudenburg a place where people take initiative and there is plenty to see and do.

A lot is known about the American composer Leroy Anderson. This son of Swedish immigrants played the piano organ accordion trombone tuba and double bass. He spoke several languages fluently and graduated from Harvard with first-class honours. While on military service the army also commissioned him to write a manual on Icelandic grammar. He already started writing musical arrangements as a student and from his 30th year arranged and composed for the Boston Pops Orchestra. Such melodiesas Serenata The Typewriter Sleigh Ride and Buglers Holiday made him world famous. His best-known work Blue Tango reached number one in the US charts in 1952 and it sold more than a million copies. In 1975 a year after hisdeath he was given a star at the Walk of Fame in Hollywood. Most of his works last no longer than three minutes about the maximum length of a single at that time. One work that lasts longer is his 1953 Piano Concerto in C for piano and orchestra. The first performance was in Chicago conducted by the composer and with Eugene List at the piano. However after three performances he was no longer happy with the work and withdrew it. He always intended to revise it but never got round to it. Itwas only in 1989 that the Anderson family decided to republish the work. This three-part composition is on the one hand characterised by a careless elegance but on the other one can hear the influence of Rachmaninoff Copland Gershwin and evenBeethoven and Mozart as well as the Viennese classics.Anderson used the sonata form for the first movement. It ends with a cadenza that carries us on into the second part (in e minor). The third part is a typically cheerful American folk dance in2/4 time a so-called Hoe Down with a lilting lyrical passage as its middle section. At the end comes a solo passage followed by a rapid close. In this piano concerto Anderson combines a rigidly classical form of composition with simple andappealing themes and elements from light music. So this work is a perfect synthesis of light music and what is called serious music in the same way as Gershwins Rhapsody in Blue. A work that can be played equally well in a concerthall at an open-air concert or even a pop concert.

from the musical Daens-Both “Daens” the movie and “Daens” the musical are based on the well-known book by Louis Paul Boon who along with Hugo Claus is possibly the most important writer of post-war Flanders. Boon was a native of Aalst and a man of the people. In otherwords he was no academic who produced his literature from an ivory tower. He was able like no other to keep his finger on the pulse of the common man. Boon’s writing is packed with true-to-life characters.Just as in most of his other books forhis work about Father Daens Louis Paul Boon took his beloved Aalst as a starting point for an epic story about justice and injustice about life and death. He takes us back to the Aalst of 1900 and submerges us in the raw hopeless life of theworking class. One man takes up the battle against the immense injustice of that period. That man is Father Daens. To a great extent director Stijn Coninx remained faithful to Boon’s words when filming the book although he concentrated more on themiserable life of the working class than on the movement the priest created known as “Daensism”. In an outstanding manner he succeeded in bringing to life reality at the turn of the century.Desperate circumstances“Daens” the musical takes us back tothe Aalst of 1888. Following a conflict with Bishop Stillemans Father Adolf Daens goes back to his hometown of Aalst. He moves in with his brother Pieter Daens the publisher of the periodical “Het Land van Aalst”. The provincial town is also a newhome for country dwellers that have fled poverty. However they have simply exchanged one set of dire circumstances for another because as textile workers they have to work 10 to 12 hours a day 6 days a week. When the local industrialist Borremansfires half of his workforce it is a source of yet more misery. Father Daens takes the suffering of the workers very personally. He makes the acquaintance of Nette Scholiers who has only just turned 17 but is already the breadwinner for a wholefamily. Daens cannot look on helplessly and so he complains about the desperate circumstances in the textile factory in his brother’s paper. An action that does not win him the admiration of Charles Woeste the leader of the Catholic Party and anally of Borremans.Own partyBefore long Daens is summoned to appear before Bishop Stillemans. The latter forbids him to involve himself further with politics and certainly when it concerns actions that risk damaging the interests of the CatholicParty. Father Daens ignores the Bishop’s words. More than that Daens starts up his own political party the Christene Volkspartij or Christian People Party. Daens is able to count on the sympathy of liberals and socialists and is elected as amember of the Belgian parliament. There Daens takes every opportunity to speak out on a regular basis and complain about the harrowing working and living conditions of the working class. Woeste and co. retaliate mercilessly. as performed by Marvin Gaye and Kim Weston- It Takes Two was a huge hit when it came out in 1965 perhaps one of Marvin Gaye’s biggest ever. The lyrics talk about how it is easier to pursue dreams together with someone else rather than by yourself. Over the years many artists have covered It Takes Two in various styles and genres. Stef Minnebo’s arrangement proves that it can even be a big hit with concert bands!

10W-60 is the name of an engine oil that is entirely synthetic has a very long life and is used mainly in vehicles from which high performance is required. In this way the composer makes the link with speed and energy two important elements that can also be found in this three-part composition. Naoya Wada dedicated this piece to the famous Japanese trumpet-player Kazuki Hayasaka and incorporated elements of boogie Gershwin and rock.

The sun glides over the white-blue rock the glaring back-light on the snowflakes whisked up by the wind mirror-images in waterfalls and ice-fields glaciers veined with moraines further on the dark caves and cliffs stone chasms that seem infinitely dark the cool shadow on the north flank of the rocks damp chilliness woods at the foot of the valley. An unceasing interplay of light and shade teaches us mankind to get a feel of the Alps. These powerful almost poetic images spark off the composers creative process which much later results in Berglicht. Another important compositional element is the chorale Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern which enhancesthe idea of 'light' even more. In this way Berglicht turned out as a choral fantasy for a large wind orchestra composed on commission to the Stadtmusik Saltina Brig and its conductor Edo Zurwerra for the Alpenstadt 2008 festival. At the start of the work after a short overture the brass introduces parts of the chorale theme accompanied by bright chords from the woodwind. This is followed by a quick section with the first variations on the theme first very rhythmically then tunefully. Then we hear an idyllic Pastorale dété though the mood gradually becomes darker. The full theme is now introduced for the first time by muted brass accompanied by sombre chords from the woodwind. Slowly but surely the tension increases while the theme of the chorale nevertheless unfolds once again in a dramatic but only fragmentary way. Towards the end calm gradually returns. The light shines once again and the theme rings out one last time but now with a different timbre and rhythm. The mountain light slowly but surely makes way for a peaceful and joyful atmosphere.

Fabella was commissioned by the Koninklijke Harmonie Sint-Cecilia Kuringen (the Royal Concert Band St. Cecilia Kuringen) on the occasion of its 100-year anniversary. The opening performance took place during the jubilee concert on 17 May 2008 under the direction of Jos Cuppens in the Hasselt Theatre. The composition tells the story of a long musical history and with a series of impressions memories and flashbacks delves into the rich past of the Royal Concert Band St. Cecilia Kuringen. From the very beginning the concert band has been under the direction of a Cuppens family descendant. This three-generation longalliance is reflected in the musical translation of the names Cuppens and Kuringen; both of these themes repeatedly appear as the leitmotiv throughout the composition.1908. An impressionist melody takes us on a trip through time and paints a provincial picture of Kuringen exactly as it was a century ago. Unsuspecting and full of expectation the concert band stands on the edge of the 20th Century. A new era is upon us... Wars are fought science discovers its power and the arts branch off into a wide variety of forms...Fabella travels through this exciting time and with a touch of nostalgia already looks forward to the future...
