Marian Antiphon-Composer's note:Each year at their Summer Festival in Tavistock the Exon Singers feature the music of a living composer. In the summer of 2008 I was privileged to be the chosen composer. Salve Regina was written for the Festival and was performed once at a concert and subsequently at the broadcast of Choral Evensong in Buckfast Abbey. The music is unaccompanied and set for a six-part choir with two parts for both sopranos and basses (and divisi for altos and tenors in the final phrase). The music begins gently and there is some dialogue between upper and lower voices. The climax in the middle uses all six parts and the end is quiet and reflective. Although some of the phrases areshort they should be sung with much expression and with appropriate crescendos and diminuendos. Written for Philip Redfern and the choir of St George's School Edinburgh who first performed it in December 2014 this is a refreshing new setting of the well-known Christmas carol. Will Todd's expertise in crafting memorable melodies is on display here along with delicate interplay between the two upper voice parts and the Piano. An approachable carol beautiful in its apparent simplicity it would be a delightful addition to both Christmas concert and services alike.

No. 3 from The Same Flame-Commissioned by the Somerset England based charity Churchill Music! The Same Flame was inspired by Pierre de Coubertin’s ideals of Olympism which gave rise to the modern Olympic and Paralympic values: Respect Excellence Friendship Courage Equality Determination and Inspiration. These seven values are celebrated in five movements so four of them had to double up – Friendship with Equality and Courage with Determination. Each movement is scored for slightly different choral forces so the work is varied. Also individual movements may suit different choirs giving the opportunity for individual performance or collaboration between choirs. All five movements of The SameFlame are published as individual octavos. A complete vocal score is available on request from the publishers.Inspired by the title of a book by Mary Ann Radmacher ‘Courage doesn’t always roar’ Guts and Grace considers courage and determination as essentially private qualities mothered by dark necessity but on occasion needing to step up publicly especially in the sporting arena and ‘roar’. This movement is intense and charged with emotion and gives opportunity for sections of the choir to shine individually as well as a beautiful soaring soprano solo section in the middle. Music-theatre works-The poems which form the basis of this work were inspired by a miniature mechanical organ playing eight tunes once the property of George III. A scrap of paper sold with it explains that 'This Organ was George the Third for Birds to sing'. Peter Maxwell Davies then set these poems to music and devised them as a semi-theatrical work for Male Vocalist Piano Violin Cello Flute Clarinet and Percussion. The songs are to be understood as the King's monologue while listening to his birds perform and incorporate some sentences actually spoken by George III. The resulting work Eight Songs for a Mad King was completed in 1969 and stands as one of the mostdistinctive and arguably one of the most disturbing musical works from the twentieth century. This is the vocal score which includes a Piano accompaniment.

This beautiful short work was commissioned in 2014 to celebrate the 20th wedding anniversary of two of the composer’s friends. It was first performed by the chamber choir Tenebrae on their album of music by Will Todd Lux et Veritas (2014). The poem by Rev Catherine Lomas works beautifully set to music – there is a wonderful lyricism to the imagery of the words which cries out for music. Primarily homophonic throughout the warm tonality and close but cleverly-constructed harmonies will be familiar to those who know Todd’s ‘non-jazz’ choral voice. The work may offer some challenges to an intermediate choir but is sure to be a real success with audiencesand singers alike.
