Blake Dreaming Goodison Quartet No. 5' was commissioned by Nicholas and Judith Goodison. First performance on 30th April 2010 at Wigmore Hall London by Roderick Williams (baritone) and the DoricQuartet. Composer's Note The commission was for a work which uses the voice as an extra instrument without a text. In BlakeDreaming I have cheated a little setting a line from The Marriage of Heaven and Hell albeit incompletely:- The roaring of lions the howling of wolves the raging ofthe stormy sea... are portions of eternity too great for the eye of man. The first section sets the Blake down to stormy sea with voice alone and follows this by a dreaming upon andaround it for voice and quartet where the baritone has pure vocalise. The second section sets the rest of the sentence again followed by an extended dreaming with pure vocalise. The baritone line should be urgentand moody suggesting eventful and disturbing dreaming. I would suggest that he imagine a dramatic outline throughout - even to specific (but unsung!) words and emotions - to ensure as powerful and gripping a dialoguewith the quartet as possible.

Italian-born Ludovico Einaudi 's Piano music has struck a chord with audiences across the world and his distinctive meditative style has confirmed his place in the music industry. His albums have soared high inthe classical charts and his recitals have been sell-outs. This is Ludovico Einaudi 's new project Nightbook - a musical meditation on the transition between light and darkness the knownand the unknown. Expressive and with a more open compositional structure sonic colours are created through the close blending of the Piano with the Strings and percussion and from the use of electronics which amplifies thesound of the Piano projecting it like a shadow in all directions. The project grew out of the ideas and 'musical sketches' that Einaudi jotted down in a notebook whilst on tour around the world. Einaudi describesthe project as A night-time landscape. A garden faintly visible under the dull glow of the night sky. A few stars dotting the darkness above shadows of the trees all around. Light shining from a window behind me. What I cansee is familiar but it seems alien at the same time. It's like a dream - anything may happen. Selections of expressive and contemplative songs from the album have all been specially transcribed for soloPiano.

This commission was supported by the Ministry of Education and Culture in Iceland and is dedicated to Hilmar Örn Agnarsson and The South Iceland Chamber Choir. The Three Shakespeare Sonnets was one of the first works that Tavener composed after serious illness in 2007. He wanted to pay tribute to his wife Maryanna who nursed him back to some degree of health so he turned to the Shakespeare Sonnets and was delighted to find that they brought forth music once again after having been silent for so long. I hide myself With a lily Go lovely Rose- Written early in Whitacre's career whilst at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas. Arranged for SATB choir includes a Piano line for rehearsal purposes. I Hide Myself Just a simple song really. All of the musical suggestions come from a careful study of the poem a quiet passionate soul occasionally speaking a little bolder than the age will allow. She loves almost to the point of distraction and this mood mustprevail in the performance: shy and sullen her passion surging to the surface only to sink back into the silence that is herself. Go Lovely Rose The piece is structured around the cyclical lifeof a rose and is connection throughout by the opening 'rose motif' a seed that begins on the tonic and grows in all directions before it blossoms dies and grows again. Each season is represented: spring begins the piece summerappears at bar 13 autumn at bar 26 winter at bar 39 with spring returning at bar 49. The form is based on the Fibonacci sequence (the pattern found in plant and animal cell divisions) - its fifty five bars are a perfect Fibonacci number. The Golden Mean appears at bar 34 as all parts are reunited to complete the flower before its final blossom and inevitable cycle of death and rebirth. Each performance should be approachedwith a child-like innocence and naivety that allows us to marvel at the return of the rose each spring. The szforzandos throughout must be light and gentle. With A Lily In Your Hand Water and Fire . If the performance of this piece connects these contrasting elemental ideas its success is guaranteed. Water : At bar 30 this ostinato should be fluid and gentle only interrupted at bar 32 asthe butterflies momentarily spring out of the texture; bars 35-38 the water should slowly transform back to fire. Bar 44 should be tiny bell-tones motivating the next nine bars another patient sensuous transformation back to

Oskar Merikanto (1868-1924) wasa Finnish pianist organist and composer. Having studied in Leipzig and Berlin he took a full time position as an organist and teacher in Helsinki where he remained until his death. He is best known for his three operas whichwere the first operas to be written in the Finnish language. However his contribution to Finnish folk music is perhaps even greater: the depth and warmth of his addition to this genre are indicative of his wider musical prowess.
