Performing Score-A Mediterranean erotic postlude to a time when Davies had been much occupied with setting the Orkney poetry of George Mackay Brown. The voice though is the same. The mezzo part is wide-ranging and melismatic and the ensembleplays music that is at once luminous and questioning memorialized and urgently communicative. Five short songs are woven together with instrumental commentaries into a single movement.

Witold Lutoslawski: Strawchain & Other Songs was written in 1951 for Polish Radio Strawchain & Other Songs presents a series of contrasting songs about nature andpeople. Strawchain itself is a set of variations where the Piano weaves around the unchanging melody. This work is based on the biblical story of the martyrdom of Saint Stephen traditionally regarded as the first Christian martyr as recounted in the Acts of the Apostles. Stephen was a member of the early Church inJerusalem. He was an inspired and charismatic preacher but he aroused great hostility among the members of the various synagogues by his teachings and he was accused of blasphemy. At his trial he looked up to heaven and declaredthat he saw God in his Glory with Jesus standing at his right hand. This so enraged the authorities that he was flung from the city and stoned to death. As he died he prayed that the Lord Jesus would receive his spirit and thathis killers would be forgiven. In this setting the choir recounts the story in Latin whilst the solo horn music depicts the violence of the stoning. The work ends with a quotation from Chopin's Ballade No. 2 in F Op.38. Commissioned by the Metropolitan and Cathedral Chapter of St. Stephen's Cathedral Vienna. First performed on 16th March 2015 at St Stephen's Cathedral Vienna by the Cathedral Choir conducted by Markus Landerer.

For Bob. arranged for Viola and Piano. First performed by Elisabeth Smalt and Kevin Volans London 2016. Composers Note: I have no idea where this piece came from and how it is structured. But beforeand after I wrote it I was nagged by the question: what does the Viola have to do with the Piano? Did this combination evolve by unfortunate accident? The Viola was perfected in the 18th century. Its naturalmétier is (private) chamber music. The Piano on the other hand kept growing and blossomed in the 19th century as the ultimate public instrument. If the piano is to play with the Viola it has to rein back its power and poseas an accompanist. Maybe a third instrument perhaps from the 20th century is needed to mediate between these two very different sound worlds. So when we play this trio' with 2 instruments I invitethe listener to mentally add the silent part(ner). - Kevin Volans
