Michael Nyman was inspired to write this single-movement piece Self Laudatory Hymn Of Inanna And Her Omnipotence in 1992 after having discovered the text in the library of a friend. The words belong to Inanna the Queen of theHeavens in the Sumerian religion who proclaims audaciously all that her father Enil has bestowed upon her. Nyman composed the piece for counterTenor James Bowman and recorded it on his eighteenth album Time Will Pronounce:The 1992 Commissions. Unlike many of Nyman’s other albums this one features only one member of the Michael Nyman Band.Nyman is a contemporary British composer of richly layered modular minimalist pieces often incorporatingperiod instruments or instrumentation outside the normal Orchestral offerings. He is particularly well known for his film scores including The Piano The Cook The Thief His Wife and Her Lover Prospero’s Books and The Claim among many others. His work is widely performed.

Score for this piece which was comissioned by London Brass and first performed in 1992. Quoting composer: The piece was completed without title on 12th August 1992. A title once considered was Canons Chorales and Waltzes butthis was dropped since there was only one canon (the opening) and only genuine waltz (apart from a passage towards the end which superimposes the canon over a waltz rhythm). The following day I read the paper that John Cage haddied - the day I finished writing. For this reason but mainly because Cage was the most revolutionary practical music thinker of the 20th century this piece is dedicated to him. His influence on my music may be perceived underthe 'very un-Cagein' surface: though stylistically there may be little in For John Cage that may have been to his taste I hope he would at least have appreciated its diversity its non-simultaneous multiplicity. Parts areavailable on hire or special order. Duration 15 minutes.

The task: to write a piece that could involve children as players singers and composers alongside a professional symphony or chamber orchestra. The solution: a peace-cry for the biosphere in which the collaborative nature of theenterprise is a metaphor for a wished-for human enlightenment to the ways of the natural world. Davies provides five musical elements and five ways of development and uses these to illustrate five branches of life on earth:water-plants trees fish birds and mammals (including man). There is a space for answers from children's instrumental groups and then a larger space in which the children can develop the given ideas perhaps with members of theorchestra. Davies returns as composer to depict through an excess of development creation turned sour. Finally everyone comes together with a unison hymn with orchestra and instrumental groups celebrating the turn of thetide .This work for young instrumentalists children's chorus and orchestra was commissioned by the Association of British Orchestras as the centrepiece of an education project which coincided with the implementation of theNational Curriculum for music in schools in England and Wales echoing similar developments in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Score. Duration c. 25mins.

Job (Vocal Score)-A substantial work for four soli SATB chorus and orchestra using text from the translation of Stephen Mitchell's The Book Of Job . Like Vaughan Williams in his Job: A Masque for Dancing Davies was inspired inpart by William Blake's 21 engravings for the Book of Job. His oratorio however is less dependent on find parallels for Blake's visual details given the direct poetry in David Lemon's adaptation of the Stephen Mitchelltranslation from the biblical original it is hardly surprising that the spotlight should be so much on Job's suffering litany. The baritone has the lion's share of the setting though the other soloists occasionally reinforce hisplea and chorale-like episodes universalize his predicament. Davies frames with work with two seminal plainsong-like passages; there is also plenty of dramatic contrast both within Job's monologues and in the vivid orchestralwriting for the smarmy Comforters the initially shrill God who finally appears out of a dazzling orchestral whirlwind and the animal life he uses to illustrate the wonders of creation to a humbled Job. Commissioned by theUniversity of British Colombia it was first performed in May 1997 by Valdine Anderson (soprano) Linda Maguire (mezzo soprano) Paul Moore (tenor) and Kevin McMillan (baritone) with the Vancouver Bach Choir and the CBC VancouverOrchestra conducted by the composer. Vocal score with piano reduction of the orchestral score. Duration c. 70mins.

Beyond Dark consists of one movement which is in three sections fast-slow-fast. Influences from the modern jazz harmony of Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea and also traditional Japanese instruments such as the koto and shakahachi. The piece lends itself to alternative fingerings which helps to give the piece an exotic flavour - some of which are included in the score included some of these optional fingerings in the score.

Vocal Score for the Opera in Two Acts.Caritas’ is in two acts the first consisting of 12 short scenes the second being a continuous scena. The overall form of the opera retains the architecture of Wesker’s stage play butalters the proportions in order to create a musically dynamic form. While each scene of the first act is centred around a specific pitch the second act is a Passacaglia whose ‘ground’ is a Cantus Firmus each repetition ofwhich begins on a different note from those of its previous statements. These large-scale architectural features are both reflected in and derived from the musical material itself.

At every turn Nyman has proved eminently practical. Not for him the ivory tower anguish of a tormented composer grappling with abstract systems. Rather he has consistently displayed an openness to collaboration a spry sense ofhumour a literate imagination and an instinctive ability to engage a highly diverse audience.
