The authorship of the six poems used in this song cycle is generally attributed to Petronius Arbiter (died ca AD66) Nero's Arbiter of Elegance and author of the Satyricon a comic novel with poems interspersed in the prosenarrative. William Arrowsmith author of a translation of the Satyricon wrote that '(The Satyricon)was clearly written not to be read silently but to be read aloud by a trained artist with a voice and virtuosity capable ofregistering the enormous variety of the work.' It is these considerations which were foremost in Elias' mind whilst writing the work - that they represent a great variety of verse forms and demonstrate a wide range offlexibility and style and that above all the Latin itself was very much alive and vibrant. Therefore the tenor part is thoughout the most important aspect of the work even though the orchestra does more than merelyaccompany. Each of the songs is different from the others and there are no more direct musical links except between III and IV. The music develops throughtout the work the sixth song containing distant memories of the first.

This work was commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to celebrate its 40th birthday. The first performance took place in June 1986 at St. Magnus' Cathedral Kirkwall as part of the tenth St. Magnus Festival. Writtenfor and first performed by Isaac Stern Davies's Violin Concerto brings together two streams in his music: symphonism and folk-fiddling. In its strongly developed substance it asks to be measured in the company of Beethoven Brahms and Sibelius while there is also particularly in the middle movement a strong element of the Scots lament. The orchestra is generally muted in colour though there is a dramatic role for the timpanist. There are threemovements played without a break - this is only one of many connections with the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto. Duration c. 30mins.

Verse 1' marks the beginning of a more ambitious and intense style of composition. The ideas are relatively simple and develop gradually in a cyclic fashion within a one movement sectional design. Progressively faster tempi leadto the main climax of the work near the end of the piece. Then a short coda leads to a very quiet ending and a return to the original tonal centre of C. Quoting composer:'In April 1975 I occupied a flat in Aldeburgh Suffolk near the seafront. As a member of the English Chamber Orchestra I had come to work for a week on a recording of Britten’s opera ‘Death in Venice’ so the real and suggested sound of the sea was in my ears so to speak for dayson end. A few weeks later when I started work on 'Verse 1' it became clear in the first few bars that I was recalling and suggesting the sea and the beach at Aldeburgh. I am not aware of any direct influence from Britten’smusic but I do however quote a small fragment from a theme to be found in a piano quartet by Mahler played early in the piece by the flute (bars 6 & 7). This work was awarded the First Prize in the Viotti InternationalCompetition for composers in Italy in 1975.

House Of Winter is a setting of four Christmas poems by George Mackay Brown for AATBBB or SATBBB a cappella choir. The music is continuous and though scored for unaccompanied voices it becomes almost orchestra in itsevocation of the calm frozen stillness of an Orkney winter on the one hand and the wildness of a December storm on the other. The setting is largely homphonic in Davies’s 'adult' modal style and with a characteristicinventiveness of vocal scoring as in the storm sequence with its whistling upper voices and eruptive bass line. The first performance took place during the tenth St. Magnus Festival as part of a concert given by The King'sSingers in Kirkwall in June 1986. Vocal score with piano accompaniment for rehearsal purposes.

Claude Debussy (1862-1918) was a French composer who is often associated with the early Impressionist movement. He is best known for his evocative Piano compositions from which these Two Pieces For ClarinetAnd Piano have been transcribed. The Golliwog’s Cakewalk is taken from a suite of works inspired by Debussy’s daughter and her toys. The cakewalk was a popular dance in the 1890’s and 1900’s andis reflected in the syncopated ragtime style. The Girl With Flaxen Hair is taken from Debussy’s first book of preludes. Its title character is inspired by a poem about a Scottish maiden who is supposed tosymbolise tranquillity and simplicity – aspects which are reflected in both the melody and harmony.

Georg Frideric Händel ’s Serse (Xerxes) has everything one would expect from a Baroque opera - many intertwining love stories affairs intrigues scheming misunderstanding and forgiving – allpresented in the great master’s magnificent music. The opera is set in Persia in 480 BC and is very loosely based upon Xerxes I of Persia though there is little in either the Baroque libretto or music that is relevant tothat setting the main focus is on the characters ( Serse Arsamene Amastre Romilda Atalanta Ariodate and Elviro – some of which are based on real historical persons) and their plotting. The English version forthe opera in three acts was made for the English National Opera’s production first performed in 1985 on the 300th anniversary of Händel ’s birth. In this edition of the Vocal score with the original Italian and thelater English lyrics accompaniment is provided by the instruments indicated in the orchestration (2 Recorders (or Flutes) 2 Oboes 2 Horns in F Trumpet in D Strings and Continuo [Harpsichord Cello Double Bass Bassoon]) butcan also be played by the Piano. Serse ’s part originally sung by a castrato can be performed by a Soprano or a Countertenor.
