Composer's Note When I considered the ensemble of eight cellos I first thought of matt and dark textures. I also wanted to go back to some ideas on symmetry. While I was pondering all that I saw snow flakes fallingfrom the dark sky of the Finnish autumn. Focusing on the snow the idea of writing variations on it and its various forms became clearer in my mind.Nuages de neige is a uniform and linear texture in which I realise my firstimpressions of that ensemble. The two Etoiles de neige are based on the idea of symmetry and repetition: the first one develops up to a certain point where it doubles back as in a mirror image the second one consists of eightsections in which the harmonic structure is repeated as well as a linear gesture that becomes ever more present. Aguilles de glace focuses on different pizzicati and superimposed ostinati. With Fleurs de neige I sought to recallthe texture of those harmonic trills at the end of the first section although more airy and diversified here. Kaija Saariaho

For Soprano and Chamber Ensemble (Clarinet in A Viola Cello and Double Bass). This extended version of a knot of time was commissioned by Faith Wilson. First performance on 10th OCtober at the CBSO Centre Birmingham by Sarah Leonard (Soprano) and the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group conducted by Richard Baker. a knot of time' began its life in 1992 as a piece for the Composer's Ensemble for Clarinet Viola Celloand Bass with Mezzo Soprano. It was originally the title of only one setting using the poem 'Cada cancion' by Lorca. The tessitura of the vocal line always seemed generally too low for the music and there were also problems withthe clarinet writing so I changed the mezzo-soprano to soprano. I also felt that I should add more settings for the piece to have more of a life and so was thrilled when Faith Wilson asked me for some music to celebrate her 60thbirthday in 2008. I decided immediately to add two more Lorca settings to this first setting. I wrote 'El grito' and 'El silencio' quite quickly in June 2008. I added 'Aire de Nocturno' in October of the same year but stilldidn't feel that it was complete and so added a brief and rather explosive setting to close in April 2010; 'El puñal en el corazon'. The whole piece will be premiered in October 2010 with the soprano Sarah Leonard and membersof the BCMG eighteen years after the initial response to Lorca's texts.' - Simon Holt

Blow The Wind Southerly is a Northumbrian traditional early 19th century song possibly with words from a much older source a haunting tune that has been recorded over the decades by many singers among them famously Kathleen Ferrier in the middle of the 20th century as well as Nana Mouskouri Bryn Terfel Leslie Garrett Andreas Scholl and others. Cameron evokes the unending wind of the sea and the endless waiting of thesinger with programmatic ‘blow’ and ‘blow wind’ Vocal accompaniments to the melody line. He postpones full Choral statement of the melody until the final verse then lets the wind finish the work. Contemporary Englishcomposer and arranger John Cameron has earned an excellent reputation for his film television and theatre work including films Kes Driftwood The Ruling Class and theatrical productions Les Miserables Spend Spend Spend and for the Royal Shakespeare Company National Theatre and others.

(Suitable for advanced players). 'In Early November 2005 my family and some friends visited thehigh Sierra Nevada in Northern California. As on former trips to the area I was struck by the strange and disarming contrast between the bright sunshine perfect blue sky and warm mountain air of the Sierran autumn; and theoccasional icy chill - sudden drops of temperature when the sun vanished behind the mountains momentary glimpses through the trees of distant snow clouds over the highest peaks. Nowhere was this dichotomy more apparent than inthe vast area of forests lakes and mountains known as Desolation Wilderness. Here the twisted shapes of the aspens are testament to the destructive power of winter. Sure enough that night the first snows fell and the highmountain passes we'd just crossed were closed till spring.

An arrangement for upper voices of one of the songs from The Little Prince a fabulous moving and melodic opera by Rachel Portman with luxurious counter melodies and placid harmonies. This opera is based on Frenchphilosopher and aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupery's novella Le Petit Prince an international classic penned in 1943. It was composed by Rachel Portman the first woman to win an Oscar for a film score (Emma-1996) with textby Nicholas Wright. While Saint-Exupery's moving parable of self-discovery is the foundation of the opera's appeal it is Portman's music that gives the work its dramatic impact. The characters are brought to life and portrayedwith a delicate combination of humour and poignancy. This SSA and Piano arrangement of The Roses by Richard Allain.

This song was written for the NMC Songbook and recorded by Omar Ebrahim. 'Raju Raghuvanshi is unmarried; he's forty five; his parents are dead; no siblings. He's had to move to Bamni nearby. For here in Katra where helived they rush into their houses locking all the doors locking all the windows crying 'Ghost! Ghost! Ghost! Ghost! Ghost!' at the sight of him. He was in prison you see where he was hospitalised. Rumours were rife: he'sfallen ill; he's been moved to another town; he's dead; cremated. Ganeshi his cousin's wife performed the last rites so his spirit could rest. 'Imagine our surprise when he turned up alive ' she said 'We thought he was dead.'Poor Raju. Poor Raju Raju Raghuvanshi; he's technically a ghost. 'Now I have to prove I'm alive. N.V. Vayangankar Chief of Police will help me. I have property you see a few acres of land. I know their game. They shall notbeat me. I say to them: 'But can't you see that my feet are the right way round? If I was a spirit or a ghost they'd turn backwards'. I was not gone long now I don’t exist.
