Sonata in G Minor for Solo Cello was written in 1924 and scored in four movements: Quasi a Piacere – Cantabile Sostenuto – Recitativo Liberamente – Allegro Con Moto Perpetuo . Apparently inspired bythe seminal Kodaly Sonata for the same instrument it is a challenging piece suitable for any aspiring virtuoso performer. Sir Granville Bantock (1868-1946) was a British composer conductor and educator. Hechannelled his energetic and creative personality into many musical projects championing the works of Jean Sibelius founding the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and composing many splendid classical pieces. Viewed by hiscontemporaries as out-of-date his music is now being appreciated as one of the last great contributions from the English Romantic movement.

Le Tombeau De Claude Debussy- In 1920 a Parisian magazine asked several leading composers to compose musical tributes to the famous French musician Claude Debussy who had died in 1918. The great Spanish composer Manuel De Falla (1876-1946) wasone of them: having met Debussy in Paris he had been heavily influenced by the French impressionists. His Homenaje (Homage) was his only work for solo Guitar although it was arranged by the composer for soloPiano almost immediately. It is widely regarded as one of the masterpieces of early 20th century music – at only three minutes in length it is often said it has twenty minutes’ worth of music contained within it.

There are three mysteries about this piece by Purcell originally scored for Viols. When it was written for what purpose it was written and why the eccentric title ‘Chacony’ rather than the French ‘chaconne’ are questions whoseanswers are all shrouded in the mists of time. The suggested dates of early 1680’s and as a piece of light music for some sort of theatrical performance almost answer two of the three questions. The Chacony is scored here forString quartet but could be played by a larger ensemble.

Evelyn Rothwell (1911-2008) was a British musician who was considered one of the best oboists of her generation. She arranged Two Songs by Mozart for Oboe and Piano in 1969. Das Lied DerTrennung (“Song of Separation” K. 519) was written in 1787 for Male Voice and Piano setting a text by Klamer Eberhard Karl Schmidt. Set in a minor key it explores the feelings of angst and pain created as two lovers areseparated. Un Moto Di Gioia Mi Sento (“I feel a surge of Joy” K. 579) by contrast is a much happier piece. It was written in 1789 when Mozart was revising his famous opera The Marriage of Figaro and was originally written as a Soprano Aria.
