Work for Flute Piano and String Trio. Quoting Karen Tanaka: The title Invisible Curve suggests flexibly curved space-time in four dimensions. The curve occurs because of weight and energy of the space-time. Myintention was to create a beautiful projection of an image of the invisible curve into the soundspace. The score doubles as the piano part.

Miniature Score. This work was commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. It was first performed on 13th May 1998 London. This piece is based on a genuine old tune 'Maxwell's Strathspey' which the composer found inan 1824 collection of Scottish melodies and which unfolds at the start of the piece on solo cello. Variations and a bold up-tempo to the quick dance we know as a reel ultimately yield to the magic that has been promised right atthe start: the northern lights take over at the end of the piece. Its inspiration comes from a walk to a community event in Hoy Hall during which Davies saw the lights in the sky pulsing in and out of time with the sounds comingfrom the hall. Duration 12 minutes. Conductor's score and orchestral parts are available on hire.

The rather unusual title of Flute Sonata for a work for orchestra - in fact a Concerto - is explained by the fact that it was originally written by Francis Poulenc the French composer who died in1963 and was a member of the composers who were known as 'Les Six' for Flute and Piano. This is the full score. With his usual skill and expertise Sir Lennox Berkeley has 'converted' this short work into aconcert which is so convincing that the Composer himself might if he had heard it have wondered why he did not think of it in the first place! Flute Sonata is a most attractive work givingfull scope to the range and versatility to the Flute as a solo instrument as well as providing us with a slow movement of unalloyed charm.

For Soprano and Chamber Ensemble (Clarinet in A Viola Cello and Double Bass). This extended version of a knot of time was commissioned by Faith Wilson. First performance on 10th OCtober at the CBSO Centre Birmingham by Sarah Leonard (Soprano) and the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group conducted by Richard Baker. a knot of time' began its life in 1992 as a piece for the Composer's Ensemble for Clarinet Viola Celloand Bass with Mezzo Soprano. It was originally the title of only one setting using the poem 'Cada cancion' by Lorca. The tessitura of the vocal line always seemed generally too low for the music and there were also problems withthe clarinet writing so I changed the mezzo-soprano to soprano. I also felt that I should add more settings for the piece to have more of a life and so was thrilled when Faith Wilson asked me for some music to celebrate her 60thbirthday in 2008. I decided immediately to add two more Lorca settings to this first setting. I wrote 'El grito' and 'El silencio' quite quickly in June 2008. I added 'Aire de Nocturno' in October of the same year but stilldidn't feel that it was complete and so added a brief and rather explosive setting to close in April 2010; 'El puñal en el corazon'. The whole piece will be premiered in October 2010 with the soprano Sarah Leonard and membersof the BCMG eighteen years after the initial response to Lorca's texts.' - Simon Holt

Love from a Stranger was a 'thriller' starring Ann Harding and Basil Rathbone based on an Agatha Christie short story Philomel Cottage . As well as Britten's score the film also included excerpts from Grieg's Peer Gynt music and a contemporary dance band. Not all of the present score was used - No. 3 Brighton was omitted and cuts were made in nos. 5 and 6. In the latter a savage cut deleted the references to themusic of the other numbers in bars 13-20 including the trombone's scale which alludes to a scene in which a child practices the piano unseen. Britten was not happy with the way his music was used and this was to remain hisonly work for the commercial cinema composed in 1936.

This work composed for Children's Voices and String Quartet was commissioned by the Young People's Chorus of New York City. Conductor's score and String Parts are available from the Publishers. My text is extracted fromRodney Livingstone's translation of a short essay by the German cultural historian Walter Benjamin (1892-1940). It was written between 1914-15 during a metaphysical phase before Benjamin embraced Marxism. This text emphasises theyoung person's as opposed to the adult's approach to colour: 'for the person who sees with a child's eyes it marks boundaries it is not a layer of something superimposed on matter as it is with adults'. This work continues myinterest in art-based texts - from 'The Kiss' (1985) to my opera 'Facing Goya' (2000/02) © Michael Nyman 2003
