The idea behind The Groove Makers is that all musicians regardless of training or musical taste can play together if they all keep the same ‘groove.’ This inspired Peter Kleine Schaars to write a piece everyone would enjoy and to give the concert band a trendy ‘groove’ that the audience can really connect with.

The Resounding Passionate Heartbeat-This piece was commissioned by Japan Ground Self Defense Force Western Army Band. In the programme note for the première the composer wrote: “I am always impressed by the expansive earth and sparkling ocean scenery when I come to Kyushu. I have met many local people here and they are all expressive and energetic. I wrote this dramatic piece to convey to the whole of Japan the memory of my experience here swaying in the west wind. I wrote this hoping that the Self Defense Force will forge closer ties with the community through this piece.” Eastern drama felt in the west wind!

This famous hymn by Sebastian Temple was arranged for the British classical crossover quartet All Angels and adapts beautifully for four part upper voice choirs! With glorious soaring phrases and heartfelt emotion your singerswill love to perform this lovely setting.

Based on Mohrentanz (La Mourisque) by Tylman Susato-Tylman Susato (circa 1500-1561) was one of the worlds first music publishers and seller of musical instruments. He left behind several collections containing arrangements of Dutch songs and dance and also published several of his own works. Three of these published in 1551 were called Musyck Boexken or music book. Almost 500 years later Jan de Haan has used one of these melodies Mohrentanz for this theme with three variations.

Concert March-Klaas van der Woude has based his arrangement An Old Swedish Hymn on an old pastoral hymn from Dalarna. This beautiful melody even attracted ABBA as they used it as the opening music for some of their concerts. Van der Woude’s arrangement is in classical style making it suitable for any occasion.

Anton Karas grew up in a modest household in Vienna and became a self taught zither vituoso. He wrote the legendary Harry Lime Theme for the 1949 British film noir The Third Man . The melody became so popular many people began calling The Third Man “The Zither Movie”! Toshio Mashima carefully turns this typically Viennese melody into a creative piece for concert band.

Satoshi Yagisawa’s Trombone Concerto is both impressive and original at the same time. It features a slow-fast-slow structure with each movement being connected to the next. The second movement with its rich choralelike writing is especially noteworthy bringing out the warmest and most delicate sounds of the trombone. Yagisawa also takes extreme care in how the soloist and band interact with each other creating an unforgettable work!

En 1724 Jean-Sébastien Bach composait une cantate fondée sur le choral du même nom de Martin Luther. Pour réaliser cet arrangement pour Orchestre d’Harmonie Jacob de Haan s’est particulièrement inspiré de l’oeuvre de Bach. Aus tiefer Not est une précieuse contribution au répertoire sacré.

This piece as the title might suggest brings together Verdi’s greatest operatic triumphs. Amongst his best hits are Nabucco from 1842 which signified a turn-around after the flop of a previous opera as well as Rigoletto which in 1851 propelled him to international fame. With Emperor French composer Thierry Deleruyelle wanted to create a descriptive musical work depicting the life of Napoleon Bonaparte. The first movement represents the idiosyncrasies of this famous personality as well as his dramatic mood swings. The second movement is dedicated to his great love Josephine Beauharnais. A contrasting third movement depicts Napoleon the fearless general and the countless battles he waged. A truly powerful work about one of histories truly powerful men.

Viterbo shares its name with a province located in the Latium region of Italy. Its landscape a mixture of fl atland rolling hills and lakes contains many artefacts of the Roman Empire as well as the preceding Etruscancivilization. This area provided inspiration for Viterbo written for the 50th anniversary of the orchestra in the town of Monterosi Viterbo.

Diptych- Diptyque is the French word for “diptych ” meaning a hinged two-part image. The first section of this two-part musical painting has an Oriental feel with characteristic pentatonic melody lines and chords. The second section is a cheerful Saltarello dance that brings out the subtleties of the woodwind section. A juxtaposition of Eastern and Western music Diptyque reminds listeners of the power of music in transcending all cultural religious and political boundaries.

Champagne Galop-Hans Christian Lumbye was born in Denmark in 1810 and has become known for his many light-hearted and airy works most commonly waltzes galops polkas mazurkas and marches. The Champagne Galop is without doubt one of the most performed works of this master from the North.
