Messager aérien il a la caresse légère et la force destructrice. Le vent sans artifice crée sa propre musique sur une partition indéfinie : il respire murmure parle souffle siffle hurle ou se plaint. Le vent invisible et facétieux a le pouvoir de nous émouvoir. C’est cette sensibilité toute naturelle que nous retrouvons dans les couleurs changeantes de cette œuvre : le pourpre du vent du soir le jaune mordoré de la brise matinale l’ébène des tempêtes. Wind Power délicieuse alchimie de légèreté et de profondeur est une excellente pièce d’ouverture ou de bis .

Chaque année la ville de Yokohama célèbre une fête particulière le “Yokohama Kaikosai” la date anniversaire de l’ouverture du port maritime qui permit le développement de la ville. L’Orchestre d’Harmonie de Yokohama (Yokohama Wind Symphony) fut spécialement créé en 2006 pour participer au Concert de Bienfaisance « Autour du Brass Band » organisé par l’Association The Brass Cruise. L’objectif de cette formation ad hoc est d’encourager et de soutenir l’activité culturelle de la population et de promouvoir la musique japonaise pour formations à vent ayant ses racines à Yokohama. Le Yokohama Wind Symphony est devenu un élément essentiel du festival. Il est constitué de plus de200 musiciens tous recrutés publiquement. En 2007 le compositeur Satoshi Yagisawa répondit favorablement à l’invitation de l’orchestre dont il fut le chef invité. À cet effet le comité de l’Association The Brass Cruise lui commanda une œuvre de circonstance. Satoshi Yagisawa composa une fanfare brillante qu’il intitula Fanfare Mi-Chi-Bi-Ki (d’après le nom d’une statue en bronze de Yokohama). L’œuvre fut donnée en création mondiale en ouverture du concert 2007. À l’instar de la statue qui l’a inspirée la fanfare exprime le désir d’un monde meilleur un monde de paix.

Les Anges dans nos campagnes-The title of this clever arrangement reveals the Christmas song it is based on. The melody can be traced back to a French folksong from the 18th century which is now known around the world. In France it is called Les anges dans nos campagnes in Germany it is most widely known as Engel auf den Feldern singen and in England it was originally called Angels From the Realms of Glory but it often known as Angels We Have Heard on High . Everyone will rejoice upon hearing the ‘Gloria in excelsis Deo’ refrain!

From Ancient Times is a major work for brass band inspired largely by the music of the Franco-Flemish School of the Renaissance. Hints of Gregorian chant and middle age dances pay tribute to music from even earlier times. The foundation of this spectacular work rests on truly ancient times; while the tonal language is of a much more modern nature!

Impressions of a Village- Bliss: Impressions of a Village contains three impressions of a village in the beautiful Brabant province in the Netherlands. The fi rst movement is in a very ‘classical style’ and appropriately captures the village’s history. Saxophones and a glockenspiel follow the path of a small playful river. The entire band join in as the small river approaches an ancient castle. The third movement contains lots of interesting rhythms portraying the hustle and bustle of everyday life in the village.

The idea behind The Groove Makers is that all musicians regardless of training or musical taste can play together if they all keep the same ‘groove.’ This inspired Peter Kleine Schaars to write a piece everyone would enjoy and to give the concert band a trendy ‘groove’ that the audience can really connect with.

Ostinati was written as a commission from Senzoku Gakuen one of the most renowned conservatories in Japan. Jan Van der Roost has imbued it with such a broad palette of ensemble colours that it puts the entire range of instruments of theorchestra in the spotlight. The ostinato element which characterizes each of the three movements in this work is sure to catch the ear of any audience.

Dances & Sonnets is a piece by Jacob de Haan inspired by the dance and poetry of the 19th Century Europe. Lively instrumental dances alternate with spoken sonnets that are recited by one or more readers accompanied by quiet solemn music to provide contrast. De Haan has compiled a list of suggested poems to be read but other poems may be selected that better fit the occasion. Dances & Sonnets is a dramatic and truly special piece!

Flight into a Hopeful Future-This opening piece by Japanese composer Satoshi Yagisawa expresses joy gratitude hope and courage. The three sections are performed without interruption. We hear ‘Joy’ in the brilliant introduction ‘Gratitude’ in the chorale-like middle section and ‘Courage and Hope’ in the closing section. A fantastic new addition to the Grade 4 repertoire for Concert Band.

He left behind several collections containing arrangements of Dutch songs and dance and also published several of his own works. Three of these published in 1551 were called Musyck Boexken or music book. Almost 500 years later Jan de Haan has used one of these melodies Mohrentanz for this theme with three variations.

This three-movement work is a tribute to French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi. The first movement depicts what is without a doubt Bartholdi’s most famous sculpture the Statue of Liberty in New York which also gives this piece its name. Next listeners get to experience the trumpeting angels which can be seen atop the First Baptist Church in Boston. The final movement takes listeners to France to view the Lion of Belfort in France.

Viennese Women (Overture to the Operetta)-The Austro-Hungarian composer and conductor Franz Lehár is mainly known for his operettas. Wiener Frauen (Viennese Women) from 1902 is one of the first operettas that Lehár wrote. The overture has quality sounds joyful is very catchy and at times thrilling! This will surely be a favourite with all audiences.

The Resounding Passionate Heartbeat-This piece was commissioned by Japan Ground Self Defense Force Western Army Band. In the programme note for the première the composer wrote: “I am always impressed by the expansive earth and sparkling ocean scenery when I come to Kyushu. I have met many local people here and they are all expressive and energetic. I wrote this dramatic piece to convey to the whole of Japan the memory of my experience here swaying in the west wind. I wrote this hoping that the Self Defense Force will forge closer ties with the community through this piece.” Eastern drama felt in the west wind!
