Based on Mohrentanz (La Mourisque) by Tylman Susato-Tylman Susato (circa 1500-1561) was one of the worlds first music publishers and seller of musical instruments. He left behind several collections containing arrangements of Dutch songs and dance and also published several of his own works. Three of these published in 1551 were called Musyck Boexken or music book. Almost 500 years later Jan de Haan has used one of these melodies Mohrentanz for this theme with three variations.

Concert March-Klaas van der Woude has based his arrangement An Old Swedish Hymn on an old pastoral hymn from Dalarna. This beautiful melody even attracted ABBA as they used it as the opening music for some of their concerts. Van der Woude’s arrangement is in classical style making it suitable for any occasion.

Anton Karas grew up in a modest household in Vienna and became a self taught zither vituoso. He wrote the legendary Harry Lime Theme for the 1949 British film noir The Third Man . Satoshi Yagisawa’s Trombone Concerto is both impressive and original at the same time. It features a slow-fast-slow structure with each movement being connected to the next. The second movement with its rich choralelike writing is especially noteworthy bringing out the warmest and most delicate sounds of the trombone. Yagisawa also takes extreme care in how the soloist and band interact with each other creating an unforgettable work!

En 1724 Jean-Sébastien Bach composait une cantate fondée sur le choral du même nom de Martin Luther. Pour réaliser cet arrangement pour Orchestre d’Harmonie Jacob de Haan s’est particulièrement inspiré de l’oeuvre de Bach. Aus tiefer Not est une précieuse contribution au répertoire sacré.

This piece as the title might suggest brings together Verdi’s greatest operatic triumphs. With Emperor French composer Thierry Deleruyelle wanted to create a descriptive musical work depicting the life of Napoleon Bonaparte. The first movement represents the idiosyncrasies of this famous personality as well as his dramatic mood swings. The second movement is dedicated to his great love Josephine Beauharnais. A contrasting third movement depicts Napoleon the fearless general and the countless battles he waged. A truly powerful work about one of histories truly powerful men.

Viterbo shares its name with a province located in the Latium region of Italy. Its landscape a mixture of fl atland rolling hills and lakes contains many artefacts of the Roman Empire as well as the preceding Etruscancivilization. This area provided inspiration for Viterbo written for the 50th anniversary of the orchestra in the town of Monterosi Viterbo.

Diptych- Diptyque is the French word for “diptych ” meaning a hinged two-part image. The first section of this two-part musical painting has an Oriental feel with characteristic pentatonic melody lines and chords. The second section is a cheerful Saltarello dance that brings out the subtleties of the woodwind section. A juxtaposition of Eastern and Western music Diptyque reminds listeners of the power of music in transcending all cultural religious and political boundaries.

Champagne Galop-Hans Christian Lumbye was born in Denmark in 1810 and has become known for his many light-hearted and airy works most commonly waltzes galops polkas mazurkas and marches. The Champagne Galop is without doubt one of the most performed works of this master from the North.

This concert work the latest of Jacob de Haan works based on American states is a suite in three movements based on a well-known folk tune from Arkansas. In the course of this varied work the folk song appears in its complete form and in fragments in major and in minor as a ballad in a lyrical orchestration as a blues accompanied by a jazzy rhythm and at the end again in its pure form. In the process all instrumental groups of the brass band get their chance to shine!

Symphonic Poem for Wind Orchestra-This piece was commissioned by Matsudo Citizen Wind Orchestra for their 30th anniversary concert and premiêred by the band conducted by Kenichiro Hasunuma in July 2009. This piece is typical of Satoshi Yagisawa in that it depicts a magnificent spectacle. This one is set in ancient Egypt and is based on the story depicted in the famous film “The Ten Commandments” (1956 directed by Cecil B. DeMille). One day Moses who was raised by the rich royal family found out that he was originally Hebrew. The Hebrews had been forced to live as slaves. Ramses the prince directly descended from the Pharaoh envied Moses’ strength and popularity. After internal argument Moses decides todeliver the Hebrew from the Pharaoh’s tyranny and escape from Egypt with them.The music starts with brilliant royal fanfare and depicts magnificent architecture the Hebrew people forced into hard labour and the slaves escaping from the Pharaoh’s tyranny. At the climax they are at crisis point trapped by the sea. Moses waves his staff and the miracle happens; the sea parts and Hebrew people successfully escape. Following on from Perseus - A Hero’s Quest in the Heavens this work Moses and Ramses is another piece written in the dramatic style favoured by Satoshi Yagisawa.

Following a successful appearance at a national competition a leading Japanese concert band commissioned the composition of this new work. The presentation of the main theme at the beginning of the piece along with its eventual development and variations in the middle section represents a very personal message for the band. It symbolises both the joy felt following the success at the competition and looks forward to further successes in the future. An inspiring work which celebrates the success of any band.
