This unusual concert work commissioned by the concert band ?Harmonie Concorde? from Sanem in Luxembourg is built on two basic ideas: the evolution of the economic and social context of this Luxembourg city with its strong mining industry and the European concept which is clearly present in this very small but prosperous country with its many European institutes. This is musically expressed in a few quotes from the European hymn Ode to Joy the closing of Beethoven?s Ninth Symphony and from the Te Deum by Charpentier ? widely known as the signature tune for Eurovision broadcasts. A work of true unity.

from 'Pictures at an Exhibition'-The Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881) was self-educated to a large extent but went on to become one of the ?Mighty Five? which also included Balakirev Cui Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov. Today he is considered the innovator of Russian music par excellence. He composed Pictures at an Exhibition in 1874 inspired by ten pictures produced by his then recently deceased friend the Russian architect and artist Victor Hartmann. The French composer Maurice Ravel made an orchestration of Mussorgsky?s composition in 1922 which is now more well-known and more performed than the original piano suite. For his transcription of Pictures at an Exhibition Tohru Takahashimade use of the original piano composition by Mussorgsky. The Great Gate of Kiev issued here separately is probably the best known melody from this classical masterpiece.

St. Michael-The French composer Louis Bourgeois lived from c.1510 to 1560. Bourgeois was cantor in Geneva and commissioned by John Calvin he composed melodies for metrical (rhyming) versions of the psalms. After completing about a hundred one-part psalms he made some four-part arrangements which were denounced and even resulted in his imprisonment for a day. Later Bourgeois published a number of psalm collections and judging from his book Le droict chemin de musique he was also an excellent educator. The melodies Bourgeois composed are (contrary to Gregorian chants) particularly suitable for community singing. This applies to his hymn tune Saint Michael which is why this melody hasbeen used for various texts written for many occasions. John Blanken made this arrangement for a wedding ceremony: an occasion in which faith and trust play a large - if not the largest - role. Hence the title Hymn of Faith. The arrangement contains four verses of the hymn. After a majestic opening the hymn follows twice the second verse being embellished in the tenor register. After a short interlude verse three follows played by a quartet. The majestic opening is then repeated as a modulation into the fourth verse which concludes the work in a brilliant tutti.

Three pieces from 'Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain'-Le Fabuleux Destin de Amélie Poulain was one of the most successful French films of the beginning of the decade due to its original scenario excellent acting and an almost fairytale-like atmosphere. Yann Tiersen’s score ties in perfectly with the film. The melodies are playful and cantabile in character - wonderful to daydream to but also a pleasure to play. The movements chosen for this arrangement are ideally suited to an accordion orchestra. The joyful yet melancholic sound of the accordion is just right to reflect the typically French atmosphere that the composer created for the film.

The Golden Age is a programmatic composition in four movements. I Overture For the Netherlands the seventeenth century was a period of great flourishing in the fields of economy culture and politics; thus it is called the Golden Age. Overseas trade boomed and the Dutch East India Company (known as the VOC by the Dutch) was founded and expanded to become a powerful -and at the time - modern enterprise. II ¡Adiós españoles! (Farewell Spaniards!) In 1567 the Spanish army invaded led by the Duke of Alva. There was a fierce resistance against the Spanish tyranny; toward the end of the sixteenth century the Dutch proclaimed theRepublic. However the Spanish continued the war. Only with the Treaty of Münster in 1648 did the Dutch get their much sought-after independence. This was also the end of the Eighty Years’ War. III Rembrandt’s Night Watch The field of culture particularly literature painting sculpture architecture the art of printing and cartography developed fast. It was in the Golden Age that the celebrated painter Rembrandt van Rijn created his famous Night Watch. IV The Admiral Overseas trade entailed the colonization of large areas in Asia from where precious products that yielded lots of money were brought in. Surrounding countries were also involved in such practices. Colonizers poached on each other’s territories in the literal and figurative sense - in this context the Anglo-Dutch Sea Wars are legendary. The fourth movement starts with the English patriotic song Rule Britannia after which the Dutch Admiral Michiel de Ruyter makes the English change their tune; one can even hear the roaring of cannons. When the smoke of battle has cleared a small fragment of a Dutch song about Michiel de Ruyter appears followed by a fitting closing.
