Danse Macabre or Dance of Death is one of the most famous works by Camille Saint-Saëns. The composition is based on the poem of the same name by Henri Cazalis (1840-1909).The dance of death is musically represented with various effects starting with twelve strokes of the clock - which of course suggest midnight. Then dissonant sounds and a somewhat wistful waltz melody follow. A thematic build-up full of tempo changes leads to an intense majestuoso which ends abruptly after which a melancholy farewell melody takes over. This wonderful symphonic poem appeals to everyone’s imagination - as it will in this expert arrangement for accordion orchestra.

This suite was composed by Jan Van der Roost on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of the ‘Koninklijke Sint Martinusfanfare’ (Royal Saint Martinus Fanfare Band) from Halle (Belgium). The composer was required to create a suite in three movements based on three images associated with the ‘Sint Martinusfanfare’ from the small town of Halle in the province of Brabant. The first movement (Andante Pomposo) describes Martin a soldier in the Roman army. In Andante Moderato we see the image of Martin who become a Christian and chooses to devote his life to God. In this movement the composer was inspired by the Brabantine gothic art of the Sint Martinus Basilica in Halle. Thecontrast between the dark Basilica and the statue of Our Lady between the soaring pillars will vividly come to life for audiences of this descriptive piece. The final movement Allegro Molto Vivace’ could have been an image for a frivolous peasant in the Halle carnival. In a triptych about St. Martin it is more fitting to refer to it as an apotheosis the crown on the pastoral work of Martin Bishop of Tours Patron Saint of the Fanfare Band and the Basilica of Halle.

In 1950 Pope Pius XII selected Marche Pontificale from the OrganSymphony No. 1 by French composer Charles Gounod as the officialhymn of the Vatican. The first rendition of the official hymn took placein the same year in Saint Peter?s Square in Rome played by sevenmilitary bands. To celebrate the 80th birthday of Pope Benedict XVI in2007 Wil van der Beek has produced a first-class arrangement of thisfamous work for concert band.

The Austrian master-composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born 250 years ago in 1756. Play Mozart contains a selection of his best-known works or themes. These have been adapted with respect for the original whilst bearing in mind the requirements of the particular instrument. With this book woodwind players can now enjoy the special magic of Mozart's music.

Adagio for Winds is similar in atmosphere to the well-known Canterbury Chorale (also by Jan Van der Roost) in that it has no exaggerated melodrama but rather a melodically wide and expressive approach. The work is full of beautiful lyrical melodies and the warm harmony and the full orchestration give the audience and the band the chance to give their thoughts free reign in a contemplative atmosphere. Adagio is a wonderfully uplifting work suitable for concerts on all occasions and is certainly not one to be missed.

Overture-François-Adrien Boieldieu (1775-1834) is considered as the one of themost important representatives of the French opéra-comique. His styleis characterised by natural unembellished melody lines straightforwardharmonies with refined orchestration. In 1800 Boieldieu achieved a major triumph with Le Calife de Bagdad. The opening is a true classic of this genre.

Turandot (1926) est un opéra posthume. Puccini décède en 1924 laissant son opéra incomplet. Turandot sera achevé par Franco Alfano d’après les esquisses du compositeur. At the Lake (“Sur les bords du lac”) d’Itaru Sakai raconte une légende japonaise. La musique est aérienne et mystérieuse à l’image de l’histoire qu’elle illustre.Il était une fois dans la lumière pâle du petit matin un jeune homme prénommé Innove. Alors qu’il longeait le lac il entendit une mystérieuse voix féminine : « La princesse Eugemaille est emprisonnée dans le château d’un scélérat du nom de Jesse. Elle a besoin de ton aide. Ne perds pas de temps pars immédiatement. ». Touché par cette voix inspirante Innove se mit en chemin vers le château de Jesse situé à l’extrémité nord du lac dans un décor de falaises impressionnant. Un vent tourbillonnant une pluietorrentielle et des éclairs aveuglants s’abattaient sur lui quand soudain la même voix se fit encore entendre. C’était la voix de Kai l’esprit du lac. Presque aussitôt le vent cessa de souffler et la pluie s’arrêta de tomber. Le sinistre château de Jesse se détachait des rochers.Chaque jour la princesse captive chantait sa tristesse. Plusieurs fois elle avait tenté de fuir mais en vain elle fut aussitôt reprise. Innove pénétra dans le château en compagnie de Kai. Commençait alors un terrible combat contre Jesse et ses serviteurs. Désemparée Eugemaille regardait Innove se battre désespérément. Kai ordonna à la tempête de se lever. Un vent tourbillonnant une pluie torrentielle et des éclairs aveuglants se déchaînèrent sur le château. Jesse et ses serviteurs furent engloutis par la tempête furieuse. Ils disparurent à jamais. La tempête se calma. Exténué par la lutte Innove se coucha. Eugemaille et Kai étaient à ses côtés. La princesse tomba éperdument amoureuse de celui qui avait si vaillamment combattu Jesse pour la délivrer. Kai s’éprit aussi d’Innove mais l’esprit du lac doit veiller sur le lac et protéger le bonheur des gens. Kai ne peut aimer Innove. Inconsolable elle retourna au lac.Au lever du jour Eugemaille et Innove se réveillèrent. Le lac scintillait de mille éclats de lumière dans le soleil du matin. La voix de Kai
