The work opens with the graceful waltz Santa Lucia which is followed by a Latin-style version of O Sole Mio a melody that became even more well known when used by Elvis Presley as the basis of the song It’s Now or Never. The cheerful Funiculì Funiculà ends the medley in 6/8 time. This arrangement for concert band by Roland Kernen will appeal to a broad audience and will leave both the band and the audience in a high-spirited mood.

Avalon is a one-part composition. The surprising opening measures describe the sudden entrance into another world. After these initial measures we hear a choral-like melody which is repeated three times in different instrumentations with increasing intensity. This represents the procession of the ghosts dwelling in the underworld of Avalon headed by the mighty magician Merlin.The exalted sound is then suddenly interrupted by a fast movement in which ostinato figures alternate with bi-tonal motives. This represents the attempt of some evil characters to invade Avalon. Mordred is the leader of this horde and together they disturb the peace and quiet in the otherwisecalm Avalon. The flourish of trumpets heralds the entrance of the Knights of the Round Table who drive away the intruders and return to their castle Tintagel in a triumphal procession. Upon their return the next problem presents itself. An inexplicable disease plagues the resting ghosts.The Knights and the Council of the Wise are convened to find out the cause of this problem. Musically this can be heard in the repetition of the initial themes. The Knights and the Council of the Wise determine that the presence of mortals is the reason that the resting ghosts are suffering. There is simply no room for mortal souls in Avalon. After a powerful statement by King Arthur we hear a glissando referring to the very first measures and… we are back in the normal world. The journey through the underworld has come to an end and a dream is over.

Missa Katharina is a mass - comprising of the standard movementsKyrie Gloria Credo Sanctus Benedictus and Agnus Dei. In additionto this the composer has added additional instrumental movements- Prelude Offertory Postludium and the massmovements Alleluiaand Amen. Missa Katharina was primarily written for choir sopranosolo and concert band but can also be performed with a choir accompanied by an organ or piano only. If there is no good solosoprano voice available the sopranos canalso sing the sopranopart tutti standing before the choir. Composer Jacob de Haan has based The Heart of Lithuania on five folk melodies from Lithuania a country that despite its small size has a rich cultural heritage. The choice and diversity of emotions largely determined by the characteristic melodies take the listener straight to the heart of the Lithuanian people.

The Blues is a well-known style of popular music. The name does not come out of thin air. After all the term ‘blues’ refers to a state of mind: with the sentence ‘I got the blues’ someone means they are in low spirits. The blues originate in the melancholic music that the slaves in the southern United States made to relieve their depressing circumstances to some extent. This new concert work makes use of ‘blue notes’ (the flattened 3rd and 7th notes of the scale) which give this exciting work its blues sound.
