Easter Fantasy-Based on traditional Easter chants Fantasia di Pasqua is a tremendous work to feature four of your players in a religiously inspired work. Often this work is performed in church concerts or religious situations and as such the composer suggests that the quartet may be utilised performing from two ‘galleries’. This creates a wonderful double-choir effect that befits the Renaissance-like style of such great composers as Gabrieli. A truly inspired work to bring a touch of Renaissance class to your concerts.

The Andante from the first movement of Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony (often nicknamed Pilgrims’ March) contains the most beautifully haunting melody supported by the simplest of bass lines and counterpoint figures. As a young musician Graham Lloyd was so fascinated by this music he bought the orchestral score to study the notes which at the time made little sense to him. However he did notice that the bass line was similar to a “walking bass” line in a standard swing tune.In this composition Graham Lloyd uses Mendelssohn’s original bass line melodic line and counterpoint figures but gives them a swing feel. Who knows maybe if Mendelssohn had been born a hundred yearslater he could have become one of our big band leaders!

This work consists of two movements. The first part is rather quiet and pastoral in character written in a gently rocking 12/8 time and expressing the tranquillity of the area around the medieval town of Oudenburg in Belgium. After a beautiful orchestral climax the second section inspired by the Roman past of Oudenburg begins. A somewhat oppressive and impending introduction leads to the musical reflection of an army parade: Oudenburg was a so-called “castellum ” and the remains of the fortress are still visible in the current town plan. A more dynamic passage follows featuring the low brass. After that the solemn rhythm of the parade is recaptured culminating in atriumphant ending.

Everest is the name of a restaurant on the 40th floor of a skyscraper in Chicago. In 2003 the composer Jacob de Haan had dinner there together with his publishers and other fellow composers. The idea of composing a march to honour the excellent cuisine the magnificent view of the skyline and the pleasant atmosphere in the restaurant arose during the visit. The results can be heard in this delightful and unusual work.

This piece is dedicated to all the citizens who live have lived and will live in the US town of Algona who commissioned the work to celebrate it’s 150th anniversary. With dark-tinted tones (low drums heavy brass) this overture begins with a primitive sacred feel it seems as if centuries-old Indian singing is heard once more. Gradually the sound becomes clearer and brighter as the same theme travels throughout the band in various guises and variants. Imposing tutti passages then give the band the chance to lavishly shine. This bright and catchy overture radiates spontaneous energy and as it features every section of the band all the players as well as the listenersare continually surprised and captivated.
