Takahashi has created a further new and exciting version for wind orchestra.

These four dances are written in a kind of neo renaissance style. Because of the fact that little technical demands are required from its performing artists these dances are mainly meant for beginning groups youth ensembles and also for orchestras in all kinds of small strengths. Jan Van der Roost originally had pedagogical intentions with this piece. Myriam Mees arranged Four Old Dances with the same intention for accordion orchestra with electronium and percussion ad libitum.

Melody and counterpoint accompanied by a peaceful harmony play a kind of question and answer game in this short composition. The piece is written in a rather ABA form with the perusiion complementing the whole very effectively.

‘Spirit of Independence’ was commissioned by the Koninklijke Fanfare ‘Onafhankelijkheid’ (‘Independence’) from Wiekevorst (Belgium) on the occasion of its 25th anniversary. The piece depicts an enthusiastic amateur music club practicing and making music together in an attentive and companionable atmosphere. The conductor has the good habit of trying to improve the sound of the fanfare by means of practicing chorales and hymns. Jan Van der Roost has used these facts in the dynamic concert piece ‘Spirit of Independence’: a chorale-like middle section is surrounded by music bubbling full of energy.

Structurée selon la forme traditionnelle de la marche Sonority développe un thème mélodieux qui chemine à travers le tissu thématique du trio. Tochter Zion also known as See the Conquering Hero Comes is the most famous chorus from the oratorio Judas Maccabaeus (1746) by the composer George Frideric Handel (1685-1759). The heroic epic based on the Biblical story about commander-in-chief Judas Maccabaeus was used by Handel to celebrate the English victory over the rebellious Scottish. The first performance of this patriotic work - written in the pleasing rich baroque style that Handel’s music is known for - was conducted by himself; the success was huge. The chorus See the Conquering Hero Comes was added later in 1748 drawn from another oratorio ( Joshua ).
